It's hardly 50/50. It just looks like that. If he released a string of songs with just him on it for the next year, he'd fall off BADLY. He's good for 1-2 solo joints a year, but his power isn't in his solo joints. Drake is still very much a feature artist, it's just not as obvious because he's such a huge act. He lives and dies by the guest feature because without it, he has no connection to black American music and culture. If he was that strong of an artist, why hasn't he made ANY rapper in Toronto pop forreal? Why he can't use other Canadians at this point and bring more of them thru the border and take over?

It's because no matter how big of an artist he gets, he is still an outsider who has no cultural roots planted here in the US. He will always NEED a black American to give him a shot in the arm. That's the paradox of Drake. He's a superstar but he's at the mercy of using the same strategy he built to get on, in order to stay on. He can climb as far up the charts as he wants but he can't go that far without using someone else's energy who's actually authentic in order to advance. It's precisely why he collabed with newcomers Blocboy JB and Lil Baby to get his buzz going again. Culturally and creatively he has no base, so he's always using somebody else lesser known to help him find a new lane to ride. Like I said, people swear Drake is giving them the stimulus package but it's the other way around. It's a pattern you'll see with him over and over again. He did it with Migos, Rocky, Quentin and many others.

i think a lot of us understood this, but OP put it all together like a jigsaw puzzle.

When I’m out, or travelling and having a good time, man the last thing on my mind is “hmmm this song that’s playing is this artist, how do I feel about them?”..of course not, if it plays at the club, lounge, beach wherever all I’m thinking about is having a good time, I don’t care about none of that. EXCEPT for literally just Drake. I can’t explain it, like someone else said it just doesn’t sit right with me. I just can’t do it, and a lot of it is because of the shyt OP is talking about.

Jay is an MC who writes his own and he did grow up in the projects of Marcy. His capitalist ambitions have are separate from his actual participation and upbringing in the culture legitimately. Drake is the total opposite.

He blew up with Best I Ever Had. That had no feature and was homegrown production.

His stock was high already on his own.

He got hit from being in YM. If you look at the fact that the average rap career is less than 3 years, all that survival shyt Drizzy did as Kendrick described In NLU.
