My experience growing up in Atlanta was different; my dad was the residence director of the West End Apartments that Morehouse College had (they were torn down for the Ray Charles Center), and later he was over White and DuBois halls. I would live there for the summers, and no lie, Atlanta was like a heaven for a lil younging. I already loved trains so the MARTA amazed me. I got to see the torch as it passed by campus during the Olympics, and I could go days without interacting with racism (I was young so I didn’t have to worry about police or anything). It was different than Mobile.
But it was wild, my brother was the manager of a KFC/Taco Bell in the Cleveland Ave/Stewart Ave (I think it’s Metropolitan parkway now) area, and he used to talk about how he got caught up into using crack while working there and trading chicken for rocks.
Even though the projects were all around the AUC, I didn’t really have any interactions with them, it was easy to just walk Lee or Ashby.
I remember around 2004 the gas stations in Cobb County still would turn on pumps before you paid; being young and dumb, I think my and my homey ran off on gas at least 15-20 times. I think back and I really thank God I didn’t get caught up in that bull.
