I hate 20. I used to live in Covington and work in Brookhaven. That stretch of 20 was the worst part of the drive daily, and that's saying alotI'm currently in Kirkwood/Edgewood/East Lake and I work in Midtown, so traffic is usually a breeze. Sometimes I ride down Ponce if I'm not in a hurry. Worst part of my commute home is getting on I-20 going East from the downtown connector
I'm in the process of buying a home in Lithonia and it'll more than double my commute. At least I'll go in during off hours.

What if they added a second level on 20 like they have in Houston and San Antonio? I really don’t see a solution to 20 because they can’t/shouldn’t expand the interstate, but it’s clear that the congestion will only get worse. It's a toss up as to which is worse: 20 between 285 Eastside and Turner Hill, or 20 between 285 Westside and Thornton Rd.
And beyond that there's northside 85, 75/575 and 400 which are all worse than either.

That’s real shyt. They could treat it like Philly and NYC and say there’s basically no more room/infrastructure for future highways to “encourage” public transit but Atlanta would really benefit from something like the LIRR or phillys suburban trains. That's been tried with 400, with northeast 85 OTP, and they're trying it now with that 75 stretch between Locust Grove and Stockbridge. It's been tried all over. Miami, DC, Houston, LA. You can increase the size of the straw all you want, usage is just going to expand to fill that space and you're back to the original problem.
Optimally there should be a balance between driving and public transit options, but as long as there's a stigma with public transit that option will always have resistance. More road capacity won't work, dealerships will just sell more cars. You have to directly address people and car culture that exists. And I say this as someone who loves driving and exploring all across the city.
