Howard University and at least 7 other HBCUs receive bomb threats, triggering evacuations and lockdowns

At least eight historically Black colleges and universities received bomb threats Tuesday, school officials said, triggering abrupt evacuations of students and employees.

Spelman College, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Florida Memorial University, Howard University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University, Prairie View A&M University in Texas, and Xavier University of Louisiana reported bomb threats. No explosions occurred.

Multiple schools ordered evacuations or lockdowns and alerted local law enforcement. It was not immediately clear whether the threats were connected or whether they were racially motivated. By early Wednesday, all of the schools had released all-clear notices to their communities.

In many cases, the threats arrived in the midst of winter break, or to campuses much emptier than usual as school officials sought to keep people safe amid the pandemic.

“Although the threat was unfounded we ask that everyone remains vigilant,” a statement from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff said, adding that the full student body hadn’t yet returned from the holiday break but those who were there were relocated off campus.

At Howard, the start of the semester was delayed due to a surge of coronavirus cases in the D.C. area in December, so students were not on campus. They can begin moving in Jan. 14 for classes expected to begin Jan. 18. Administrative operations had resumed Monday, but most staff members are working remotely at the moment, according to a Howard spokeswoman, Kimberly Holmes-Iverson.

The university said D.C. police contacted Howard’s Department of Public Safety on Tuesday afternoon to alert them that their dispatch center had received an anonymous call saying that two bombs had been placed in Howard’s administration building. The two departments secured the perimeter, according to a statement from the university, evacuated the building and searched the area. No active devices were found, and the area was cleared.

Spelman College officials announced Wednesday that its Department of Public Safety and the Atlanta Police Department responded to a potential bomb threat in the Manley College Center on campus Tuesday. The building was secured after a search; no device was found, and Atlanta police continue to investigate.

A bomb threat was called in to Norfolk State University on Tuesday evening, school officials said in a statement. The university’s police chief, Brian Covington, said police relocated all students, faculty and staff to a safe location until the campus was cleared. The FBI and Norfolk Police Department are helping the university’s police department in the investigation.

Whitney Cruse, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Washington Field Office said they are collaborating with other law enforcement agencies in areas where the threats occurred.

“We have no current evidence that HBCU’s are specifically targeted,” Cruse said in a statement. “We are monitoring the events closely.”

The threatening messages arrived during the afternoon or evening, schools said. Pine Bluff officials said their school received a threat about 5:15 p.m.

Shortly after that, at about 5:30 p.m., North Carolina Central University police received a call regarding a bomb threat on campus.

The campus was immediately locked down, according to school officials, with an alert sent to students and employees. Multiple agencies, including ATF, law enforcement and fire departments worked with university police to ensure all buildings were cleared, according to a university statement. An all-clear was issued at 9:15 p.m.

The threats come after three Ivy League schools received similar threats in November and TikTok posts hinting at potential school shootings prompted a dozen school districts across the country to tighten security last month. Law enforcement officials later determined those threats were not credible.

Police give ‘all clear’ after bomb threat near U.S. Capitol triggered evacuation of multiple buildings

Nationally, the frequency of bomb threats has declined in the past two years, according to the latest tallies disclosed by a federal government data center. But the number of actual bombings has risen — a trend that forces schools to take threats more seriously.

In 2020, the most recent year for which the data center has published tallies, officials said 818 bomb threats had been documented. That figure was about a 20 percent drop from the previous year and about half of the 1,627 threats received in 2018.

But officials reported 428 bombing incidents in 2020, a 71 percent increase from the previous year and the highest number since 2016, when 439 bombings were documented by ATF.

Don't do that. NYC has been building skycrapers/tall buildings since 1890
As someone from NYC I agree, I always have to catch myself and say you not in NYC anymore. Every city has their own history. Plus who the fukk wants every city to look like NYC.

But atlanta has always been called the baby apple to those from up north atleast in my world.

Piedmont park was actually designed by the same person who designed central park I heard

I know i said i'd make a final list out of all the posts we had about dope ATL food spots but I been busy lately. Keeping these posts saved together for now so we can make a list.

Anyone wanna contribute to the list make sure to add the hashtag #atlfoods to your posts so it's searchable

Here’s an overall list of places I like or have been to or were recommended to me

Just posting names. I’ll edit with details in a bit.

Peruvian
  • Las Brasas - Downtown decatur. Dope food anf dope drinks
  • Mambo Jumbo Cafe - Cuban/Peruvian fusion. Good ceviche and even better masas de puerco. For my Haitians, masas de puerco is same as grio
  • Sabor Inka - Dope food. Been a while since i been.

Haitian
Ole restaurant - Used to be my spot. I feel like the food is no longer as good and since they dont do live music anymore the vibe aint the same. I still go every other weekend at least
Coconut grill - Was probably the best vibe among all caribbean restaurants in the ATL area..But it was far as fukk (Duluth area). The principal owner has since moved out of state and relocated his business. One of the former partners there is the same person who opened Rock Steady in midtown
Rock Steady - Was advertised as aa Caribbean restaurant early on but neither haitians or caribbean claim it. THey just have a few caribbean stuff (Haitian and Jamaican stuff like Grio and bannann peze and piklis etc) on the menu. The spot is dope. THe vibe is dope. Mostly African American crowd so dont go there expecting a caribbean vibe.
Spice house - Haitian-ish. Similar to Rock Steady but not as dope a vibe and food not as good
Cafe Olange - I havent been and heard mixed reviews.
iLounge - In Marietta area. Cool little spot. Nothing special about it but i fukks with them

West African
  • KokoRico - Ivorian. Dope food and dop francophone african vibe. I know one of the partners that own it. Older Ivorian breh named Marcelin who ran a maquis out of his house in Doraville. Edit: This place has since closed. They relocated to the "Tropical Cuisine spot listed below
  • Ike’s café and grill - Probably dopest west african spot in the ATL area. It's just a bit of a drive
  • Le nouveau maquis - Ivorian food. One of my new favs. I've only dined in once. usually do take out. Love the food.
  • 10 degree south - Not quite west but it's South African cuisine. But it's very...WHITE.
  • Mina’s kitchen - I used to love that place. I just found out last week that they closed/moved. I used to love their Suya
  • Meskel - Ethiopian spot in stone mountain. Very authentic. Rarely see non-ethiopians int here.
  • Bole - East African. If you want authentic ethiopian this is your spot. I like it better than Desta. Enough said.
  • Tropical Cuisine - THis is the new KokoRico. I felt like their food wasnt as good as KokoRico but since they just opened 3 weeks ago so i'll give them another chance

Cuban
  • Papis - My favorite cuban spot back in the days but it aint the same no more.
  • Cuban diner - I havent been but this snobbish brazilian chick i was trying to fukk swears by it. I have to see for myself.

Breakfast/brunch
  • Folk Art
  • Flying biscuit
  • Please help me expand my brinch options.

Seafood
  • Baltimore Crabs - One of my favorite places to eat at but i just hate that it's a little far from everything I fukks with. I just dont know nor hang out in Cascade like that. Black owned and well ran restaurant where you can go chill and enjoy the vibe and the people. TRY THIS PLACE. I met Keisha Lance Bottoms there once.
  • Juicy Crab - Seems like it's the default seafood place for most people in ATL. I only go to the Smyrna one. Need to check out the others. It's good enough for me but some think it's great and others think it's awful
  • Spondivitz - MY personal default place for crab legs and shrimp boils.

Yet To try but will soon
  • The Consulate
  • Virgil's Gullah kitchen
  • Noble Fin
  • Piassa

Fried Chicken spots recommended to me but have yet to try
  • K & K
  • Marietta Daily or Local
  • Hottie Bs - Edit: I have since tried this my bad. It's okay. I still prefer Gus's

YOOOOOO

Bamba
Serbea
"The African grill". It's somewhere near stone mountain

Mina's kitchen by the Atrium

Okay I passed by this spot with my wife when we were headed to Virgil's one night. Gotta get out there and try it.

I ain't been to Mikkeys yet. A rapper from Chicago named Mikkey Halsted started that spot and brought it down here

We need to make a Google Doc with all these food recommendations, shyt I might put it together myself

A few spots I've frequented in the 15 months or so since I've been back in the city:

Mexican: El Solecito, Bone Garden
Breakfast: Egg Harbor
Burgers: Village Burger, Hampton and Hudson
Wings: LT's
Pizza: Jet's, Slim and Husky's, Davinci's
Fried Fish/Seafood: Yasiin's/Ameen's

mikkeys my wing spot now if i dont do JJs or JR for lemon pepper.

Good look breh! Are you in our ATL discord?

And that's an open invitation to any of our ATL-residing brehs or brehrettes to join. It's not super active but a bit more private compared to the public Coli thread. If you're interested just shoot me a PM

For once I agree with @intruder, blue cheese & ranch on wings & pizza is :camby: :dwillhuh:

As for the restaurant turn, I’ll give y’all a few:

-The Optimist (my personal favorite) West Midtown, best oysters in the city. Elite seafood options on the edge of downtown
-Kevin Rathbun’s (O4W) The best steakhouse in Atlanta IMO, great service, unbelievable sides and not super pricey for the caliber of food that you’re getting
-KR Steakbar (Peachtree Hills)Kevin Rathbun’s newest restaurant that combines steak and Italian and arguably one of the sexiest vibes in Atlanta. For a large party or private one, book the gold section in the middle of the restaurant for that extra layer of luxury
-Miller Union (West Midtown), classic American food done at a high level
-Little Alley Steakhouse (Buckhead location), best combo of steak/seafood in the city.

Honorable mention:

Bocado (West Midtown)
Chai Yo (Thai) (Buckhead)
American Cut (Buckhead)
Southern Gentleman (Buckhead)
Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours (Upper Westside/Underwood Hills)

BTW, Juicy Crab sucks. You lost if you’re regularly going there

Escobars Seafood
Atlanta Breakfast Club
Spice House
Slush Atlanta
Twisted Soul
Desta Ethiopian Kitchen
Nouveau Bar and Grill
Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint

^ All Black owned

Rays in the City
Little Bangkok (Thai)
South City Kitchen
Little Alley Steakhouse
Iron Age Atlanta (all you can eat Korean BBQ)
Bones
Canoe
Sky Lounge
Rathbuns
Aria
The Garden Room
Imperial Fez
Steamhouse

IOptimist is more fine dining, really elegant seafood. Juicy Crab is more like an everyday place. The Gathering Spot and it’s breakfast & lunch menu (black owned + black chefs/staff).

Another place I go to sometimes is Spondivitz

sure I misspelled it. Dope spot

And to my fellow Ethiopian food lovers also check out these two places other than Desta

Bole- it’s right down the street from Spondivits near the airport. Authentic and dope as fukk. The ambiance in the place is not all that but the food… :ohlawd:

Bahel - it’s the place directly across the street from Desta. Dope food. Some things I like better there than Desta. Just not as great a vibe as Desta

UPDATE (CBS46) — The landlord at Amsterdam Walk, Halpern Enterprises, has terminated the lease with Loca Luna effective immediately because of an overnight shooting.

Halpern sent the following statement:

The safety and well-being of our patrons and tenants is our top priority. Effective immediately, Halpern Enterprises has terminated the lease agreement with Loca Luna at Amsterdam Walk.

Video on social media captured the moment when people scrambled for cover during the shooting outside of the restaurant.

Evelyn Salmeron expressed deep concern after learning about the incident. She's a nanny who cares for children who attend a pre-school next to the restaurant.

Luke Geckeler works at one of the neighboring businesses and is also bothered by what happened.

It's the second time in three months there has been a shooting outside Loca Luna. In October, a man was shot and killed during a fight in the parking lot.

Police are still investigating the shooting. At this time, no arrests have been made.

Original story below

ATLANTA (CBS46) — An overnight shooting outside of a popular midtown restaurant sent people scrambling for cover.

It happened near Loca Luna along Amsterdam Avenue. Police say an altercation broke out in the parking lot of the restaurant which quickly escalated to gunfire and bullets hit two vehicles and injured a man.

The man, who has not been identified at this time, was shot in the leg, but managed to drive to a nearby gas station where he called for help.

The man was taken to the hospital where he is reported to be stable.

It is unclear whether the shooter has been apprehended at this time.

The incident comes after a similar exchange took place outside of the establishment in October 2021. According to police reports, the dispute began because the alleged shooter was leaning on the victim's vehicle.

An arrest was made in that case.
