The Former B’s Cracklin’ Barbeque Property in Riverside Becomes a Food Truck Park
Upper Westside Yard takes over the Main Street property once home to B’s Cracklin’ Barbeque, which was destroyed in a fire two years ago
Food truck park and community green space Upper Westside Yard opens Friday, June 4, in Atlanta’s Riverside neighborhood, taking over the property once home to B’s Cracklin’ Barbeque, which closed following a fire two years ago.
Owner and Riverside resident Lenise Williams says she sees the new neighborhood food truck park as a gathering place for area residents and plans to eventually host movie nights, a weekly farmers market, and retail pop-ups on the Main Street property.
“There are so many families moving into the area and our options for food and fun are limited,” Williams tells Eater of the impetus behind Upper Westside Yard. “I got tired of seeing the lot with boarded up windows on the building on site and decided to take action. The goal is to build the community and also support local Atlanta entrepreneurs.”
The June 4 opening for Upper Westside Yard kicks off at 3 p.m. with games, live music, and six mobile kitchens, including mini cheesecake purveyor BreezKakes, vegan pizzeria Bear Pizzeria, Grub Truck, brunch food truck Grits and Things, New Orleans Big Easy Sneauxballs, and ZenJen Juices. Seating is available at picnic tables throughout the park and dogs are allowed on leashes.
Upper Westside Yard officially opens for regular hours starting Friday, June 11.
Renovations are now underway on the old B’s Cracklin’ restaurant building, which will become home base for Williams’s bespoke leather goods business, Made Leather Co. Former B’s owner and pitmaster Bryan Furman returns to Riverside next year to open his new eponymous restaurant, Bryan Furman BBQ, around the corner from Upper Westside Yard on Bolton Road.
Only two privately owned food truck parks currently operate in the city. The Atlanta Food Truck Park, located on Howell Mill Road, features a rotating roster of trucks serving vegan and vegetarian fare. Triton Yards, a food truck and container restaurant park in the Capitol View neighborhood, includes a covered patio and hosts weekly movie and sports nights.
City of Atlanta recently announced plans to expand publicly designated locations for food trucks to operate within more commercial districts around town. This latest food truck program expands these areas beyond the boundaries of downtown and allows operators to apply for the establishment of new locations in existing on-street parking spaces within other commercial districts in the city.
Last fall, the Atlanta City Council passed a resolution to create a roving “food truck village.” According to city council Resolution 20-R-4315, the food truck village would periodically travel to various established locations throughout Atlanta “monthly, bimonthly, or trimonthly.” Similar to Austin’s food truck parks and the food cart pods found throughout Portland, Oregon, the Atlanta food truck village would provide owners and operators with expanded licenses and public vending right-of-way options within the city.
Upper Westside Yard hours beginning June 11: Friday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
