The guy is 25 years old and we basically gave him a two year guarantee deal after helping get us a road playoff win with the likes of Richie James, Isiah Hodgkins and Darius Slayton as WR core.
I don’t like paying him 40 mill per but he earned at least another couple of years given the strides he made with a new coaching staff and the current QB market.

This is a repeat of the Titans with Tannehill and Henry. They paid the wrong guy and are going to be trapped for two years because of it.82 mil guaranteed is a lot for a qb who can't beat the eagles or cowboys, but the giants could have done worse.

The cap hit from franchise tagging Jones wouldn't have left them enough $$ to keep Barkley
Paid the wrong guy? They're keeping both. All expectations are they come to an agreement with barkley as well. They just tagged him to hold him over until they do.
Doesn't work cap wise. And this is essentially what they're doing. Next year is a wash because he'd be coming back no matter what in either scenario. So they added an extra year and can improve the team dramatically. If he sucks, toss him. Its not like an NBA contract. He's gone after two years if need be.
