As far as I'm concerned Jay was never in the same tier as Nas. The little beef they had just pitted their names against each other but it's obvious to any knowledgeable hiphop head one is superior to the other.
The thing is Nas is just too talented, skilled and knowledgable for Jay to ever compete with long term.
With Jay ever since American Gangster and even arguably since the start of his career, you could easily predict what 80% of the subject matter on his album will be before coppin' it. Money and Coke lines. Jay is a solid lyricist but that shyt gets tired and old.
Nas continues to re-invent himself. His lyrics will stand the test of time and will always be relevant. I've actually gained knowledge listening to Nas' music over time. You can say that about only very very few others.
