For all this demons, Budden is self-aware and largely honest. His career also never reached the heights of Game's so it was easier for him to "let go" of being known for music in favor of being known for discussion of music. He definitely deserves his respect but he's made the worst decisions every step of the way.
He seems to be pretty popular online so I don't know why he's never gone the Budden route.
I don't think Doctor's Advocate really counts as a sophomore slumpI think What happened to Game is what was kinda about to happen with Snoop. If Snoop doesn't sign with No Limit in 98 and get back to popping his career probably has the same trajectory.
Snoop's debut= classic
Game's debut= classic
Both had sophomore slumps
So-so Third albums
Now here's where they seperate
Both had good to excellent 4th albums
But by this time Snoop was reunited with Dre and was all over 2001 which then reignited Snoop's status in the game and he dropped some very good and well recieved albums from 2000-08 all physically platinum albums.
When Game gets to album number 4 he's still a name in the game and still affiliated with interscope records but he never gets the roll out he had for his 1st 2 projects. But he still makes some good azz albums. But all the sucka shyt was constantly following him around and every album does worse and worse. Even though they are good albums. He never endeared himself to the culture because he's always caught up in some shyt. And why the Fukk did he choose Wack 100 to be his manager??? He's been nothing but a "net-negative" for Game's career.
I think Game post-"retirement" has been using writers which would be explain the lack of originality point. The weird thing is: I actually enjoy most of Game's music on a casual level and I feel like Red and Drillmatic are his only true duds.
However, my issue with Game is that his music simply isn't distinctive enough nor has enough of a standout personality that makes me actually rank him on the levels of Cube, Kendrick, Pac, etc. Hell, E-40 who's not all that technical of a rapper is someone I'd place above Game as an overall West Coast rap artist.
Game's 2000's albums were great enough at showcasing his consistency and proving that he didn't need G-Unit or Aftermath to make good albums. But, around the 2010's, Game just started becoming unoriginal and simultaneously too trendy and too much of a throwback tribute act at the same time.
You would have Game jacking flows from other rappers in the same way that a ghostwritten producer like Dre and Diddy would and he'd do it so relentlessly that it started to feel overly performative and inauthentic. He would also use blatant samples and interpolations of other iconic rap songs with his version being the Great Value version compared to the original. Also, he often recycles the same album themes and subject matter on most of his albums.
So, I think in spite of Game's skill level and good albums, he simply doesn't have enough originality, personality, and creativity to stand out from the other legends and icons of the West Coast. He's almost like Crank Lucas if he had a mainstream rap career and hailed from the West Coast.
