Don't know too much about that bridge. I am guessing that it wasn't being maintained well and gradually became weaker over time due to inherent structural enytopy and external forces e.g weather, other minor collisions that did not leave visible damage. It's maybe similar to how repeated trauma to a bone can cause minor stress fractures then eventually a collision causes a major fracture.

It was maintained fine and is only 50 years old, which is nothing in building/structure s. None of that matters if a massive boat slams into the base of the support structure.

Obviously there are other ports...But would you want to deal with the extra days and money it would take to leave from Florida or New York when you planned on arriving in Baltimore?
And those are major ports already on schedules to be booked with other ships, so who even knows when all these rerouted ships would even be able to dock there?
