Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera raised eyebrows by tweeting that a federal judge went too hard on alleged Jeffrey Epstein enabler Ghislaine Maxwell by denying her bail.
“Hate Ghislane (sic) Maxwell all you want, allegations of her loathsome crimes depict events that happened a quarter century ago,” the mustachioed 77-year-old TV reporter wrote. “She denies all & has not fled US & not going to leave now that she’s purchased estate in New Hampshire. Despise her, but under law she should get bail.”
A judge ruled Tuesday that the former socialite posed a flight risk “simply too great” and should be held in police custody, according to
NPR.
“The combination of the seriousness of the crimes, the potential length of the sentence, the strength of the government’s case at this stage, the defendant’s foreign connections and the defendant’s substantial financial resources all create both the motive and the opportunity to flee,” U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan said during a Tuesday virtual court appearance.
A trial date in July 12, 2021 was set for the 58-year-old jet-setter.
Charges against Maxwell include conspiracy to entice minors, conspiracy to transport minors, and transportation of a minor, with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. She has been accused by multiple alleged victims of gaining their trust, then grooming them to sexually gratify Epstein, with whom Maxwell had a
relationship.
She has denied all charges of wrongdoing.

Epstein, a 66-year-old sex offender, died in jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on multiple charges of sexual misconduct. His death was ruled a suicide, which sparked controversy due to his relationships with powerful men including President Trump and former President Bill Clinton. Both men deny any misdeeds, though Trump told
New York magazine in 2002 Epstein was a “terrific guy.”
Trump added that “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
