Jay-Z's entire career is based on his image as a successful business man. (previously drug dealer). He is very good at marketing this image based on what he accomplishes off the mic. The essence of his discography boils down to accomplishing something then rapping about it. I got away selling drugs and got rich, I own my own label, I'm the president of def jam, I married Beyonce, I made 100+ million selling Rocafella, now I ride in private jets and buy million dollar paintings, I have a daughter now...... You get my drift.

Nas on the other hand is the exact opposite. His accolades and acclaim stem from the music he creates. He is looked at as an "artist". When someone tries to criticize Nas they go for his image. Slave to labels, never made enough money, marital problems. He can drop Classic material but still be clowned for what goes on in his personal life.

I find it amazing how much image matters for an artist. In Jays case as long as he is making headlines, closing deals with the nets and making millions he will be applauded no matter how average his music is.

Nas on the other hand will continue to be underrated as long as people use his personal life as a reason not to check for him.

Nas' illmatic = debatably the greatest hip hop album of all time

That being said Jay-z's discography minus BP2/Kingdom Come trump
Nas' ....Jay-Z's business acumen was developed over time , in 98-00 he had $$ but he wasn't anywhere near where he is now, he was that dude then bc he was killin the game by dropping consistent hits and manages to stay relevant /in a constant state of career elevation

Nas however, while certainly putting out great albums /music as well had WAY more lulls in his career. Even now w LIG, I don't hear anybody outside of the Internet really rockin w that LP like that. As a Nas fan it's always dope to hear new shyt from him but c'mon now it's reaching to say his discog/amount of classics is even coming close to Jay.

They're a bit of a yin and yang, Jay's flow and delivery trumps Nas, Nas lyrics are better, and is more of a better storyteller, Jay sounds vague when he trys to be deep. One of the main things I do notice though is that people are more critical of Nas, if he makes a commercial record people are always quick to say he is selling out. For example, people got on Nas for supposedly selling out on IWW for switching to rapping about the mafia lifestyle, but give Jay a pass for switching to the mafia lifestyle when he use to rap like the fu schnickens

Just the way I see it, all time Jay flow and delivery>Nas flow and delivery, even though Nas's prime flow (IWW era) was just :wow: overall they appeal to different people some people will lean to Nas more, some will lean to Jay more, they both are icons in this genre at the end of the day
