The irony of your statement is part of the reason slave masters taught Christianity to slaves was to instill acceptance of their enslavement by shifting the focus of the slave to getting to Heaven in the afterlife...:francis:

This is true. But, only 25% of the enslaved were Christian -- and believed in God.

Crazy huh?

No, I'm actually using documented evidence and the fact that the majority of slaves weren't Christian until AFTER the Civil War when slavery was abolished....

Yup.

I recently learned this via "Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism."

At first I didn't believe it, but then I read the sources and narratives --- and blew my mind.

I think it's beautiful that they went back. But, that is only ONE of the many of his ancestors. And he has ancestors from other countries and tribes as well. That's what makes him ADOS/Black American. To choose one out of the many he is made up of is different.

But, I respect him wanting to be classified as Angolan-American - it is his choice.

I don't know why this is a joke -- cause sadly many of our elders indeed did say that. And these folks are just repeating what they thought.

I know I did.

But, you always have to remember many of the elders were only repeating hearsay. You can read slave narratives and see the same things. When really for most it was probably enslavers DNA from violation that gave them those traits.

And you have to remember many of ADOS ancestors were enslaved by the Civilized 5 Tribes -- and many did the same as whites (raped, violated) and many intertwined with those tribes. So, it's some truth to some. Many of those tribes today do not recognize their Black freedman.

Yeah, my family was affected by this… it never meant shyt to me.
I mean I’d say it sometimes as a kid as a little ‘cool fact’ but I never thought I actually WAS them.
We don’t even look them. I’m dark as hell :pachaha:

It’s interesting to see the way others internalized it.
