A side of me is thinking this fight was irresponsible too. Salka had no business being in the ring with him, and could have fukked around got killed. That last shot he took made me cringe a little bit. Dude is basically a novice and had absolutely no business being in the ring that night.

I think that's part of the reason why the WBA and WBC wanted no parts of it. Had dude got seriously hurt there would have been a ton of backlash.

Where Was the Protest? Garcia-Salka Draws 808k Viewers
By Jake Donovan

For all of the complaining that was done by fans and media alike regarding Showtime’s August 9 tripleheader from Brooklyn, the ratings hardly suggest a mass protest.

Ratings were hardly spectacular for a show that loaded with undesirable matchups, but the average of 612,000 viewers for Saturday’s show from Barclays Center was a slight increase from Showtime’s overall average for the 2014 boxing season.

The main event saw lineal super lightweight Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia score a 2nd round knockout of Rod Salka in a non-title fight. Salka was moving up more than two weight classes for the fight, having last fought just above the super featherweight limit in an upset win over Alexei Collado this past April in a Shobox-televised headliner.

Garcia was dominant throughout the brief affair, which averaged 808,000 viewers and topping out at 850,000 viewers. His previous network appearance—a disputed 12-round win over Mauricio Herrera in March–drew just 972,000 viewers, with this fight dropping off roughly 17% from a show that was marketed around his appearing in Puerto Rico for the first time in his career.

There was no such hook for this show, which marked his third career fight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia helped christen the building, headlining its first inaugural boxing card with a 4th round knockout of Erik Morales in their Oct. ’12 rematch.

His other appearance at the venue was a 12-round points win over Zab Judah last April.

The evening’s co-feature saw Lamont Peterson batter Edgar Santana en route to a 10th round stoppage in their 140 lb. title fight. The bout drew an average of 648,000 viewers, a massive improvement from the ratings for his win over Dierry Jean earlier this year, in which just 402,000 viewers bore witness to his upending the unbeaten contender.

Opening the telecast, Daniel Jacobs made history by becoming the first-ever cancer survivor to lay claim to a major title. The belt at stake was of the paper variety, collecting a made-available middleweight title with a 5th round stoppage of Australia’s Jarrod Fletcher. The bout drew an average of 558,000 viewers.

Overall, viewership steadily increased over the course of the evening, despite the harsh criticism surrounding the show and the fact that there were plenty of alternate choices in terms of getting your boxing fix. NBC Sports Network presented a live card, headlined by heavyweight contender Vyacheslav Glazkov in a disputed 10-round decision over sturdy journeyman Derrick Rossy.

The best fight of the night – and year – came on beIN Español, with Francisco Rodriguez Jr. walking through hell to outslug Katsunari Takayama in their strawweight title unification bout in Mexico.

Televised action was also offered on Azteca America and UniMas, both of which are more commonly available on cable and satellite packages than Showtime, a premium cable network.

Fans and media had plenty from which to choose on Saturday evening. While Showtime can hardly claim victory—the average of 612,000 viewers hardly impacts their overall season average (587,000 viewers per Showtime Championship Boxing event, compared to 957,000 viewers for the average HBO World Championship Boxing event thus far in 2014)—Saturday’s ratings suggest that most would rather complain about what one network offers than not watching at all (or watching something else).

Showtime returns this weekend with another televised tripleheader, airing live from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Shawn Porter and Kell Brook meet in the main event, a pair of unbeaten welterweights colliding in a 12-round title fight.

When you're paying extra for Showtime and HBO, you're not going to willingly refuse to watch boxing just because of some piss poor match making especially if you're a die hard boxing fan.

I stream ppv's all the time, but I'm gonna watch live boxing or dvr it whenever it comes on tv and it ain;t no extra fees involved. That's just the way it is breh.

By Dan Ambrose: As expected, last Saturday’s Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka triple-header fight card on Showtime brought in poor numbers. It was a night of mismatches, and the poor numbers reflect dismal match-making that was done for this fight.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the card averaged 612K viewers. The main event fight between Garcia and unranked lightweight Rod Salka averaged 808K viewers with a peak of 850. This was 17% lower than Garcia’s last fight against Mauricio Herrera, which brought in 972K. The poor match-making for Garcia led to a lower amount of viewers.

The co-feature fight between IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and #13 IBF Edgar Santana averaged 648K. This too was a mismatch with Peterson hitting Santana at will until the ringside doctor ordered the fight stopped in the 10th.

In the third televised fight on the card between Daniel Jacobs and Jarrod Fletcher, the fight averaged 558K. Jacobs battered the weaker and over-matched Fletcher for 4 rounds until stopping him in the 5th round after dropping him.

The low numbers for Showtime card tells you that Golden Boy Promotions and adviser Al Haymon can just throw together fight cards filed with horrible fights and expect boxing fans to want to watch them.

If Haymon was interested in marinating the fight between Garcia and Peterson by having them fight on the same card against other people then he should have found some better opposition than Santana and Salka. Out of all the light welterweights in the division there has got to have been some better fighters free then the guys that they found for this fight.

Showtime needs to be the watchdog in this situation to keep from letting low standard fights makes it on air, because if they purchase mediocre fight cards that are offered to them by the promoters are the advisers then all it will lead to is more fight cards filled with mismatches in the future.

Salka should have never been put in the situation for him to be fed to a light welterweight like Danny Garcia. It was a terrible fight on many levels. Garcia came out into the ring at a reported 155 pounds against a guy that looked no heavier than 142 at the most, and the fight was basically won on size alone by Garcia.

Dan Rafael had this to say about the Garcia-Salka fight: “It was total garbage. It was a waste of time. It wasn’t just the Peterson fight. He got $400,000 for what amounted to be an easy sparring session. Danny Garcia got $700,000 for that nonsense against Salka. I don’t blame the boxers. The entire card from top to bottom was total drek. They did 9 fights. The blue corner was 9-0. The blue corner won basically ever round of every fight. You’re talking nonsense. The boxers take home paydays. What we should have seen last Saturday is Lamont Peterson vs. Danny Garcia. Then after the fight, while they [Garcia and Peterson] didn’t say they wouldn’t take the fight, it didn’t seem like they were begging to take the fight. I just don’t think we’re going to wind up seeing it, which would be more of a shame. The only obstacle getting in the way of making the fight is Al Haymon by not giving the blessing to make it happen.”
