*Sigh* where is this fukkery leaded besides strangling any independent initiative in the continent (i.e. ECOWAS currency, Chinese investment). It is telling how the French and Americans, usually big rivals in Africa (i.e. Rwanda/Burundi) are now joining hands. Nigeria needs to get domestic arms industry up to snuff and stop stealing oil revenues and use it to buy modern tech.

I don't care how bad Buhari is, any collapse of Nigeria will be an unmitigated disaster in the region and I fear that is what they are planning/preparing for.

Nigeria is starting to build drones and manufacturing domestic versions of assault rifles, but it's too late - I think. The current Nigerian administration is trying to cozy up to France and America. Perhaps in recognition that they've been check-mated.

PressTV-‘Saudi, UAE recruiting 1000s of African mercenaries’
Saudi sources told the al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper that the kingdom is likely using Chadian mercenaries in its operations abroad.

They said the speculation had gained more credence after Chad’s President Idriss Déby traveled to Saudi Arabia earlier in the month to observe the Joint [Persian] Gulf Shield-1 military drills in the eastern Saudi city of Jubail.

The kingdom has signed secret agreements with N’Djamena, enabling its enlistment of thousands of Chadian mercenaries, according to the sources.

The UAE is, meanwhile, seeking to recruit thousands of mercenaries from Uganda to deploy in Yemen and Somalia, Yemen’s al-Masirah television network reported, citing Arabic media outlets.

:snoop: so we going back to the 1200s and fighting wars for the Arabs again. So what do you think these dudes use their training for when they come back home?

They probably use their training to fight insurgents against the government. Or they fight in other countries territories. For example, I'm sure the Sudanese soldiers will utilize their training in Dar Fur or the Nuba Mountains eventually.

Somaliland and Puntland in heavy gunfight

The armies of breakaway Somaliland and Puntland early Thursday engaged each other in heavy fighting, reports said.

Both sides reportedly employed light and heavy guns near Tukaraq District, about 1,100km northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

The casualty figure were not immediately available.

Somaliland and Puntland have hand long-standing border disputes, particularly over Sool and Sanaag regions that separate them.

Somaliland controls most of the disputed territories.

Troops of the breakaway state seized Tukaraq town from Puntland in January this year, and the two sides have since then engaged in intermittent gun fights.

Somaliland in the northwest declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991, but has since failed to win international recognition.

Puntland was established as a semiautonomous authority in 1998, but remains a member state of the Mogadishu-based federal government of Somalia.

HOW BOKO HARAM OVERRAN A NIGERIAN ARMY BASE

EXCLUSIVE: Untold story of Boko Haram's deadly attacks on Nigerian troops in Borno, Yobe

Military sources said the troops recorded initial successes in clearing villages of Boko Haram remnants along the way. When they arrived in Kwakwa, they also managed to flush out some insurgents lurking in a part of the community until they advanced to other parts that had become muddy as a result of heavy downpour in recent days.

At about 4:00 p.m., the men found it difficult to move with their gun trucks due to the impassable terrain and decided to disembark and proceed on foot to clear other areas of terrorists. It was at this point that Boko Haram fighters suddenly emerged, formed a ring around them and opened fire.

Puntland forces recapture strategic town

Puntland forces recapture strategic town | defenceWeb
Military forces of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region retook a strategic town from Islamic militant group al Shabaab, an officer said.

Captain Saiid Mohamed Diriye said his forces retook Af Urur without a fight. The town is important because the main road that links the cities of Garowe, Bosaso and the Somali capital Mogadishu passes nearby.

“The militants fled into the hills and we are pursuing them,” Diriye told Reuters from Af Urur.

Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab fighters captured the town - which they and Puntland forces fought over several times - last month, he said.

Al Shabaab wants to expel the African Union-mandated peace keeping force AMISOM from Somalia, topple its central government and establish an administration based on its strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

Attacks are relatively rare in Puntland, which has its own government and security forces patrolling its territory on the north-eastern tip of the Horn of Africa, jutting out into the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea.
