You could perhaps go to Finance though it would be difficult. Howard U. has a much better pipeline to Wall St. etc.

I would not aim for investment banking and finance since they are shedding jobs right now and many of those firms are going to be hit hard in the next downturn. Accounting can be solid but you need to specialize. Something like forensic accounting (finding fraud) or another type of specialized accounting can get you as much money as finance

National Association for Forensic Accountants

Institute of Certified Forensic Accountants

Salary and certification info
Note that even without a certification, the median salary for a forensic accountant is $90k. That means 50% of them are making more than $90k.

Why do African-Americans not Choose Accounting?

Join this - National Association of Black Accountants - I think they have a Hampton chapter

Their vice chairman is in forensic accounting (Earl Fagan). If you are really interested, you may want to email him with some questions. He is in KPMG's Atlanta office and his email is on this web page

I was asking cuz my nieces are starting college this year and they are worried about how much they can handle since they are working full time.

Are you college aged or an older breh going back to school? I was 30 when I went back to school so I was working full time. I took accelerated 5-week courses, just one class at a time, to get it over with.

Yeah I did 15hrs and 36hrs of work. It's doable. I just planned my daily schedule Monday-Sunday in increments of 30mins and I tried as much as possible never to deviate. Very Stressful and VERY TIRING! but I still had time to do everything a college kid would want to do.

Brehs :mjcry:

I got that phone call. When I graduate next year I will have a six figure job waiting for me in New York City.

My mom was a teen parent who didn't go to Yale and gave up on her dreams to have my sister :mjcry:

I'm finally happy :jawalrus:

Update?

Heading back to school fulltime time in the fall my bretherens after a 6 year absence.

I was on a partial scholy for track and field back in my hayday but unfortunately it was a private school, ended up racking up 40 grand in debt and dropped out and moved back to cali. Cold part was after my sophmore year i was a deans list honor student doing real good headed to law school...then i decided to party all the time when i turned 21:cheers: and not go to class:snooze: and ended up dropping out later. I worked these last 6 years, traveled, and still partied all the time. Now I'm a lot more focused, done partying, and fast approaching 30. Im going back. Majoring in Aerospace/Aviation Management @ San Jose State. Gonna take me 3 full years but when im done imma be:win:

Update?

I'm a junior now :whew: it has honestly went by fast. Never in my life did I see myself coming close to graduating from a university but im actually almost there. I stopped going to community college in 2011 and didn't get back into school til 2014. That break showed me ain't shyt out here :scust: now I'm working on getting my certs and this degree.

Damn what you do in the mean time. I know ain't shyt out here but what happened that gave you that realization :lupe:

I was working at a dead end retail big box store . taking directions from uneducated rejects who are trying to ride a sinking ship long enough to get close to retirement:scust: I have a better job now that I got over the summer but one of the guys who has been at this new job said they only really respect/invest in people with degrees, and that's why they put so much into me is because I'm almost out of school.

I just transferred to the business school last semester after being undecided for like 3yrs.. I fukked up when I first got in college because I didn't know what I wanted to do and didn't even know how to study for tests. Plus I was working night shift at UPS and it was hell. I took some accounting classes and got A's in both, so then I had to get my GPA up just to get accepted into the business school. Got accepted in last semester, made deans list and now I'm on my way towards a degree. I probably have a little while to go since I fukked up at first, but I'm just happy that I'm doing well now and working towards something. Taking summer classes would also speed it up but I'm just trying not to fukk up. Business school is rough here and they have high GPA requirements.

Give me an update breh.

Did you ever get that degree?

Y'all just not gonna give the coli an update :damn:

Sorry for the late reply my coli fam. The early pages feel like ages ago. Crazy it’s been all these years already. Well, I’m done with school, no more for me, ever. I entered the aviation field around the summer of 2014. Through some connections, hard work and dedication, I’ve managed to become the International Flight Operations Manager out of SFO. I manage the operations of a bunch of international carriers that come in with no base or mainline team here. So for example, Air New Zealand, Swiss Air, Air France, KLM and a half dozen more. You can only imagine the perks of the job coupled with the pay. But the responsibilities and the amount of people i have to manage can be a lil shytty

Brehs i wanted to ask a quick question regarding time management at college, I start in 10 days and really looking forward to it but i want to already start planning my week as I want to get involved in loads of things around campus.

Everyone says youll have loads of freetime so im gonna take up 2 sports which are normally in the evenings and i also want to work part time (probably about 16-20 hours a week) along with that and my studies. Will i be cool or is that too much do you think? Im cool with it and enjoy being busy instead of wasting my time doing other shyt but dont wanna burn myself out or anything

How many credits are you taking? What kinds of classes are you taking? What would you weekly schedule look like?

It really depends on the type of person you are. I'll tell you that I work full time, I take two classes (online), and I'm currently studying for the CPA exam. My job is predictable and flexible so I can plan around it, but it's also difficult because there is so much busy work in one of my classes (management capstone course) that it makes it difficult to study for the first section of the CPA (which is a information dump). There are so many factors when balancing different activities that you'll need to figure out what works best for you.

Managed to find my schedule its pretty decent actually but ill be taking language classes as well so i dont think its 100% set yet. At the moment its mondays and tuesdays only about 2 hours each day but when i pick my language itll be more classes so not sure yet. Also 90 credits but again the language classes should add to that as well

Honestly i think its pretty doable by the looks of it and I'll still have spare time free to socialise around campus. Im ready for it all breh and wanna keep myself busy so i think ill go for it if i find the workload too heavy i can always cut back

My advice is to ramp up your commitments slowly. I would work and do one sport your first semester to see how you handle it. You really need to do good your first semester or the rest of college will be stressful digging out of that GPA hole.

Also, if you really want to maximize free time and minimize stress here is a good tip. The first few weeks of class, get your books and read the syllabus from the professor. Spend extra time studying and outlining the material to get at least 2, preferably 3, weeks ahead.

It sounds crazy but if you get two weeks ahead and then just work regular, you will have a buffer so even if you miss studying one night, it is ok. Also, when you finally see the material in class it is your second time seeing it so you are likely to get it.

Regardless, I would set aside at least 2 hours per day of uninterrupted studying. Take Friday night and Saturday night off but study 3-4 hours on Sunday and probably an hour on Saturday. If you do this, you should be straight and have plenty of time to chill and have fun.

A degree is business management (by itself) means nothing, And this is coming from someone with a degree in business management. If you knew you weren't gonna do any grad school (I'm assuming you aren't), you should've specialized in something like Finance or Accounting. I only did Management cuz I knew I wanted to do business law and I started law school right after (literally the same month) that I graduated with my bachelors. You might wanna think about getting an MBA or something

Speak for yourself not for the entire degree/major. Business Management is a great degree. If you didn't go apply yourself with going to internships, achieving a high GPA, applying yourself then that is your fault.

Classes under Finance, Management, Administration fall under the same umbrella. A lot of classes overlap. They only start to really change a bit once you get into the 400 level courses. If you would have got a degree in Fiance you would have been in the same boat. The management degree is useless because you made it useless. There is isn't to many jobs that you can only get with a Business Finance Degree and not a Business Management degree.

If you graduate from a decent state school with a great GPA you will be fine if you didn't major in anything like a history degree or some environmentalism art degree.

If you graduate from a school like the University of Florida with a 3.5 in business management you will be fine. Got plenty of cats starting out at 55k EASILY
