I'm going back to school this fall to complete my undergrad degree. Right now I have about $11K in student loan debt from 2001. I dropped out after dikking around my freshman year then took some classes at community college. Older, wiser & motivated by a higher income ceiling, I'm currently working my way out of default and will be eligible for more FAFSA funding by September. I'm planning on taking a semesters worth of classes at a community college then transferring to UMDBC or UMD.

Couple of questions:

1. How will having an adult's income effect the amount of money I'm eligible to receive?

2. Anyone here ever graduated in 3 years while working full time?

3. Where can I find information on grants for adults continuing their education?

4. Where can I find info about receiving credits for work experience or how to test out of 101 type classes.

1. Depends on a bunch of different variables. It will affect need based aid depending on the amount. Types of Aid | Federal Student Aid

2. I wasnt in that situation. It depends on your work schedule and amount of credits coming into it. I think it is do-able, but if you think you might struggle with the overall workload, it's better off in the long run to be patient and get the school work done at a high quality. This will not only look better on your resume, but it will reduce your stress dramatically and probably help you actually learn better. Test the waters early on with a bunch of classes and drop however many before the first deadline if you cant handle it. No penalty in that and shouldn't affect any aid you get unless it converts you from full-time to part-time student.

3. The link I provided above has some answers to that. There are tons out there..perhaps even extremely local ones to you. Check out the campus you are going to attend sometime and ask/look around there.

4. Not too familiar with that one. There are a few free online classes/seminars that you could probably go through to see how things go. Another idea is to find a syllabus of a potential 101 type class you are going to enroll in.

Just have confidence. You'd be surprised how much maturity and wisdom can improve your studies. In a class you may have been :mindblown: :camby:about when you were young, you might end up being like :obama::feedme: now. You'll be fine.

Any undergrads trying to get done in 3 years? Just curious why and what keeps you motivated?

I have a friend at Cornell trying to do this by taking 28 credits a semester.

Besides tuition costs, taking 5 years > taking 3 years.

Heavily depends on AP credits and major though.

:ohhh:

Where i went a business class was 3 credits. College of arts and sciences 4. I can't imagine taking 8 classes at once. I'd start balding or somethin

That's beyond insane. If he was gonna take extra credits wouldn't it have been smarter to take 18-22 credits during the semester and manipulate the courses you take so he could take intersession and summer session courses. I'm basing my logic under the assumption that once you register for more than 18 credits, tuition would cost more based on how many more credits you take beyond 18. I don't exactly know how Cornell works as far as financial and your friends financial situation as far a scholarships and aid, but 28 seems way too much.

Anybody here every been in the military and got out and went back to school?
I just did this and started last semester. Taking summer classes now. To have the GI Bill pay for full tuition you have to go to an in state public school (basically somewhere you're stationed, pay taxes, or where either of your parents live). Unless you get approved for the yellow ribbon.

I'm doing really well. I came in to the situation willingly knowing I would take a step back for now to have myself with more potential leap forward in the future. I was an E5 so I was making decent money too.

But I'm in Atlanta now, and fortunately, I have a roommate. So there's that, and I have a part time job and I'm in the reserves... So I'm not really too worried about money and usually month to month I pull in close enough to what I made when I was active duty. So it's been all good so far. That post 9/11 :whew:
