I never saw Cinema Paradiso. I will look for it though.
I thought Amores Perros was overrated, but that's not a criticism on the film. It's more a criticism of my friends who hyped it up to me.
cinema paradiso was on netflix for a while..i think it's gone now

yes amores perros is overrated.. but it's the stupidity of the characters that do it for me.. who leaves their dog trapped for a week under the floor board?

def one of those films that stays with you or crosses your mind every so often though

Do you think Battleship Potemkin is a great movie today @HHR ?
I mean it's a part of history and has it's place because of things it did for movies but I can't see myself watching it again without thinking about the fact it's was a tech wonder in 1925 during the entire runtime
Also I'm kinda shocked of the lack of The Mirror and Come and See on the lists.

I don't believe in genres (only "good" and "bad" :jawalrus:) so I'm cool participating in this one, pretty cut and dry

1. The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933; Fritz Lang)
2. Persona (1966; Ingmar Bergman)
3. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928; Carl Theodor Dreyer)*
4. The Double Life of Veronique (1991; Krzysztof Kieslowski)
5. Au Hasard Balthazar (1966; Robert Bresson)
6. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010; Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
7. M (1931; Fritz Lang)
8. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974; Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
9. The Killer (1989; John Woo)
10. Winter Light (1963; Ingmar Bergman)

in the spirit of this topic's decreased activity I'm gonna throw in ten more for the sake of discussion

11. Rashomon (1950; Akira Kurosawa)
12. Andrei Rublev (1966; Andrei Tarkovsky)*
13. The White Ribbon (2009; Michael Haneke)
14. Mon Oncle (1958; Jacques Tati)
15. L'Atalante (1934; Jean Vigo)
16. Orpheus (1950; Jean Cocteau)
17. The Turin Horse (2011; Bela Tarr)
18. Caché (2005; Michael Haneke)
19. Grand Illusion (1937; Jean Renoir)
20. House of Tolerance (2011; Bertrand Bonello)

*I'm of the opinion that these are two of the greatest films ever made (that I've seen) but wanted to keep it consistent to my "favorites"

Also calling in @DaveyDave @theoretic @Roberto Dinero @NZA @spinoza @One4Deuce because they held it down in the Foreign move threads back in the day

I see La Haine has already been mentioned. I was gonna drop that one.

I'll mention my 2 favourite Spanish films that I know haven't been mentioned, even though I haven't read the thread yet.

The Torrente movie series. They've made 4 so far. The best ones are the first 2. Its a dark comedy about a loser ex cop. He's ugly, fat, racist, fascist, alcoholic that patrols the streets of Madrid by himself at night.

The first one is called "Torrente: El brazo tonto de la ley". Translates to "Torrente: The stupid arm of the law". The second one is called "Torrente 2: Mision en Marbella". Its based in the very rich city on Marbella, in the south coast of Spain.

For French movies, check out one called "Le Pari". translates to "The Bet". Its about 2 dudes who dare each other to quit smoking cigarettes for good and the hilarity that ensues.

This shyt is going to be hard. I have enough trouble imagining a top 10 of foreign directors without making impossible decisions.
