I don't know where I stand with Biopics because they are the only genre that the audience doesn't all start at the same place, for the most part anyway (trailers and such). Peoples prior knowledge, or the lack thereof, has so much influence on their opinion. Theory of Everything, Imitation Game, and Selma do not work as a whole unless you've got some prior knowledge about the people imo, they all feel like biopics. Thats where Foxcatcher stands out for me vs. Theory of Everything, Imitation Game, and Selma, at no point I thought "I wonder if this really happened this way", even tho I knew it was a biopic, while watching because I was so invested in the characters and the story.

And were they nearly as bad as Sextape:beli:

Sextape was one point away from being #5 worst film of 2014 if that helps.
:ehh:@kp404 & myself need a movie night.

:jokerlove:

Why should a bio pic get points for showing the main character's human side? it's a bio pic.....

Selma was NOT a biopic. It was about Selma and Selma alone. King was obviously the main protagonist, but Selma was not a biopic at all.

It's not like Ray, The Theory Of Everything and Walk The Line, it's a "moment in time" biopic like The Queen, The King's Speech and Foxcatcher

I can agree with that, but I still felt like it was a strictly moment in time narrative...even the beginning makes it feel as though its strictly about Selma and King later comes in as the protagonist.

I'm a huge fan of using atmosphere to your advantage in horror and Jennifer Kent does it excellently, so I have to disagree. And I think the execution was very good; it had a few minor issues, but it was a very unsettling movie and lightyears better than 99 percent of American horror being released today

Thats just like rap nowadays tho. We measuring this against mediocrity. The atmosphere was pristine, but I kept waiting for something horrific to happen and best we get is a dead dog. Ik the movie is all symbolism but i left wanting more.

Yea it left me wanting more too, but I think for Kent, the story is the most important element and the scariest thing is left to the imagination. She does a great job of laying out the problem and stakes, and I think she wants us to take the movie and think about it, then revisit it in the future. For me, I think about the ending a lot; I'm biased though because I love stories and if a movie has a great story, I'm already sucked in mostly

IDK I don't think the story was terribly compelling. The atmostphere was any easy 10/10 but everything else seemed like an after thought. the mother did a great job being batshyt crazy though.

Let the right one in, pans labryinth, the thing, the shining, etc. thats great stories. i'm not seeing it with this but it could be from you nikkas hyping it up so much :lupe:

:ehh:I can see that. Without getting into spoilers I'd say that the film's conclusion resonated strongly with me given my past/still occasionally current experiences. We can get into it later on an individual thread.

:lupe: Did you enjoy As Above So Below?
