that movie was funny as hell
selma top 10?
You don't feel it should be?
No
Good movie but there were other movies that I liked more than it
It was my number one movie so obviously I feel like it should be on the list.
there were more thought provoking, unique films that came out in 2014
selma is a typical oscar-bate bio pic to me
I disagree. It has some of the trappings of that because it's a biopic but it's also not just about MLK, it doesn't shy away from showing his human side, and the most powerful scene of the film, he's not even in it. It doesn't take the same routes that those movies normally do and when it does, it puts its own spin on it. It's not a movie about about him as much as it's about the way legislation is passed and the politics and theater that goes along with it
Why should a bio pic get points for showing the main character's human side? it's a bio pic.....
Because most of them don't. If you're saying that it's a typical Oscar bait biopic I'm pointing out ways in which it isn't and that's one way. And even with all that aside its a movie with great direction and great acting and a great screenplay.
if do i quick run through in my head that featured the "human-side" of a character in a biopic:
Jobs
Theory of Everything
42
Imitation Game
Foxcatcher
Saving Mr. Banks
I wouldn't even say saving mr banks qualifies because it doesn't dig deep into Disney and it's not like the world knew a whole lot about the Mary Poppins author and Selma is a better movie.
42 was Jackie from the perspective of white people rather than just Jackie. And if we are talking jobs, Selma is a better movie than that and Foxcatcher. You may disagree but that's how I feel.
im not debating whether those are better movies tho, im pointing out these movies because they are "biopics" and feature the "human side" quality that you claim most biopics don't feature.
And the main reason I pointed out is that biopics about revered people rarely go there. Martin Luther king is revered. So comparing a biopic about him to one about P L travers is apples to oranges at best. Rarely do biopics go there when it comes to American icons. Even Lincoln didn't really do much of that. When you're making a movie about an iconic figure who is thought to be this beacon of good and has the image of being almost perfect, it's rare for for a movie to explore the fact that they weren't perfecr and they had foibles and flaws like anyone else. Foxcatcher isn't in the same league because it's about a murdering psycho who isn't revered. 42 played it safe and made Jackie seem like an angel
you moved the goalpost a little there but whatever
