I'm sure these dudes can fight very well, but yeah there are a lot of misconceptions about Shaolin out there in the wild. First off, there is only one real temple in Henan. A lot of people have this ridiculous notion backed up by bad sources that Shaolin temple is the source of martial arts or something (ridiculous given the ample evidence of martial cultures all over the world, china included that predate this point). Shaolin is not a singular style of quanfa like a primary school, it is more like a 'university' style of teaching where several different fist styles(tanglangquan, luohanquan, tongbeiquan, meihuaquan etc etc), qigong and weapons training are taught. The reason for this is that Shaolin was a refuge for reformed criminals, murderers, or even martial artists that killed the wrong guy at the wrong time or something so they fled to the temple so a lot of sets are there. The average person in America who teaches Shaolin are teaching some form of long fist or another quan fa with a couple strengthening exercises and funny uniforms. There are a few people teaching the proprietary Shaolin sets and exercises, but they are few and far between.
@ExodusNirvana might know some stuff ass well.
prescientific paradigm =/= something that isnt useful. at any rate im tired of this debate.so all martial arts traditions who DO deal in chi and chakras are practicing an unproven psuedoscience iyo?
Yep. All this 'feat' shyt that people drop their jaws at can be found outside of what you think of as "shaolin" settings and is really just supplemental training anywayGood post
The things that they do are widely done in non Shaolin settings it's just that these dudes take their discipline techniques to the extreme, which is to be commended because it shows just what the human body is capable of given the proper training.

people like to be sold on mysteries and magic powers and though
others here will disagree but to me...was he hiding a lighter?
Whats the point of painful training when you arent learning BJJ. How does all of this keep you from getting taken do the ground and ground n pounded til its lights out. I mean seriously are we learning how to fight or join Cirque De Soleil.@Mowgli would body all of them
Does the shaolin temple have 1 legit fighter fighting in the public or are these arts so dangerous it wouldnt be fair to the rest of the world. Come ON. All this pain and brutality does not stop the mechanism that causes your jaw to get rocked and a man to get KO'dthere is some dude named yi long who represents himself as a shaolin master. he can be seen in some mediocre fights online. i think some american police officer gave him that work. the shaolin temple has said he is not a member, but i guess the dude still goes out there starting fights and proclaiming his alleged shaolin status
and ive seen some older videos of people proclaiming to be shaolin monks in real fights doing some silly looking stuff that looked like it would get them bodied by a mid-level UFC fighter
i guess the shaolin website lets you research who is legit and who isnt now...
dont these dudes usually look very unimpressive when they actually fight somebody?
