Nas don't need to rely on literary devices like that tho. That's what makes him special. Dude is seriously an idiot savant as a writer. He has no training, yet he strings together words to covey thoughts and emotions at an elite level. He puts you in a place and time better than anyone to ever do it.

People swear the 90s was the height of his lyrical prowess, but verse 1 of Thief's Theme says different ("rats drink from water drops" ). Loco-motive says different. Illmatic was so stunning because of his age. Precociousness always heightens artistic achievement. But, he's gotten better since then.
