Great post. Nas has only gotten better with age. Tbh he's been way more consistent since Stillmatic dropped.Nas don't need to rely on literary devices like that tho. That's what makes him special. Dude is seriously an idiot savant as a writer. He has no training, yet he strings together words to covey thoughts and emotions at an elite level. He puts you in a place and time better than anyone to ever do it.
People swear the 90s was the height of his lyrical prowess, but verse 1 of Thief's Theme says different ("rats drink from water drops"). Loco-motive says different. Illmatic was so stunning because of his age. Precociousness always heightens artistic achievement. But, he's gotten better since then.

AZ's verse was better than Nasir's. In fact AZ's verse is probably my favourite verse in hiphop.

Classic verse, and I agree maybe the most overlooked verse on Illmatic.
AZ dropped a verse for the ages and he lead off the track. Almost Everyone, myself included, really thought AZ stole the show. But Nas verse is really good, but it took a minute for me to realize it cuz I was always rewinding AZ's verse to memorize it.

AZ had better flow, always liked Nas verse better though. It's more personal than AZ's. Plus him referencing San Quentin was weird.
