Why is it even worth that much? Is that off the strength of the ad revenue?

6x revenue is pretty inline for a lot of these digital subscription businesses.

Probably see potential to increase the subscription price, boost ad inventory / cpms, cross-sell / bundle with NYT subscribers

That's $70 per subscription.

My subscription was 12 dollars total for a year. (1 dollar a month)

So I assume most people are on the same plan I'm on. The have great content I hope they keep it as it's own entity.

They sold out because the aim of the venture was to bleed out local journalism by bringing on the best in their respective markets. Like the typical Vulture Capitalist, once they've bled everything dry, they've flipped it. In this case, they sold to a company of whom they've poached from.
