The Anti-hero/Grey Villainy is the worst thing to happen to the way antagonists are written in comics, TV and movies.

If Thanos is an example of this then your whole premise is wrong.

Killmonger and Omar as well.

So like.. find some examples where this "grey villian" thing has ruined a movie or show.

Thanos is particular was excellent
I would say the only example of having a grey villain where it was genuinely a disservice to the movie was Antman 2, The phantom lady. Seemed like they all couldv'e just sat down and talked and avoided the entire conflict they were having throughout the film. She want to find OG Wasp to save herself. They wanted to save OG Wasp, OG wasp had the power to save phantom lady. Seems like reason for them all to work together.

This is literally the only time i felt it was a disservice to the movie. all the other times it fleshed out the character more and enhanced the film.

It's been a thing for forever though. The sympathetic villain that either goes all in or is redeemed.

50 years of multiple movies and off-shoots but dude never slipped from his agenda.

Stolen from Quora.

main-qimg-d0c96c4b6f85986ea9e45efdc7475444-pjlq

He murdered his own family.

main-qimg-88865c31c8f1e90b8be3a8bd45c41dac-pjlq

He carelessly invaded his own planet for personal gain.

main-qimg-108999ec12be04bfb3aa4f673a59071d-pjlq

He manipulated a 10 year old for thirteen years.

main-qimg-9e25adae91c85c56d0331324a890997e-lq

He started and orchestrated a galactic war which resulted in millions, maybe billions or even trillions of deaths to transform a republic into a tyrannical empire.

main-qimg-8b62148a21a8958bb8ce48916054740e-lq

The blood of those men who died are on his hands ^^^.

He then committed a merciless genocide on peacekeepers, not even sparing children.

And after doing all that, the least he could do was make his Empire fair and moral.

But no.

Continued being a tyrant, literally had a planet destroyed and planned to destroy many more and continued slavery. He ruled with an iron fist only caring about himself.

I say it depends more on how its done. I find most of Disney’s “Grey” villians not done well at all. They push the sympathetic side too much only to then have them engage in pure villiany right after. I never really see how the audience is suppose to be sympathetic to them at all. I think Thanos and Killmonger were done pretty ok but everything else is meh.

Everybody isn't morally gray. There are a lot of scumbags in the world, and people who do ish just to cause chaos, because they enjoy it. These people shouldn't be relatable. And there are forces that oppose them. That's what the most entertaining movies/TV shows/comics had. There are exceptions, but everyone doesn't need to be
