just cuz people dont understand doesnt deny its impact in society. Remember Marvel comics picked up AKIRA in the 80's/90's and a movie was directed in vain of AKIRA 15+ years after AKIRA came out.

I'm not denying it's impact. but we're comparing it with other anime that had/has much more 'mainstream' appeal. anime that was on TV at that

I remember how it was back in the day with Akira. that shyt was hard to find before they made that remaster in 2001, with the new English dub (in fact the OG dub has become kinda collectible). I remember in the early 90's calling mad video stores, trying to find someone that had it (do I could dub with my 2 vcr's :scheme: )

Well the reason why I made the thread was based off of its impact. I know other shows had more mainstream appeal but none have spawned as many successful children as AKIRA. ie. impact

Matrix creators wouldnt have careers without The Matrix (Thanx to AKIRA) - checkmate.:win:
:rudy: No, they have careers because they took the script for the movie from someone else. Plus Ghost in the Shell had more influence on the Matrix than Akira.

why dont u name the band?...maybe because they are not a household name...like Kanye West/Hype Williams, who put AKIRA in his video.
PUSA was a multi platinum selling grunge group in the mid 90s. Right below Nirvana and Pearl Jam in popularity. They really don't have any relevance to a hip hop board during 2013. They're probably bigger than Camron and Vado though :laff:

...much greater impact fam...we still see AKIRA reference/inspiration in top tier mainstream media to this day.
I think if you ask more people if they know what Speed Racer is and what Akira is more people would recognize Speed Racer. Cinematically Akira has influence but society as a whole? Nah.

You still admit that AKIRA had some influence on The Matrix. One of the biggest US Sci-Fi franchises. What block buster franchise did Speed Racer inspire?:rudy:

You basically made my point again...you have Cam & Vado who are pretty big in hip-hop but not Kanye megastar status yet they both pulling references from AKIRA....my main point is impact, the scale touches all boundaries & cannot be denied.

People recognizing it isnt the argument, its all about impact. Tons of people would recognize Busta Rhymes over any of the Sugar Hill Gang however who made the greater impact in hip-hop?

it's like if some modern rapper references "93 til infinity". that doesn't mean that Souls of Mischief had more impact than other cats in 1993. in fact, a lot of people reference that kinda shyt to appeal to the hipster crowd that think's it's cool to be 'in the know'. it's an 'easter egg' for those that recognize it, but most people won't recognize it

What exact Akira influence in The Matrix did you see? I saw alot of Ghost in the Shell and Megazone 23 but not much or any of Akira.

Camron and Vado took a beat that some producer did and made a song. They might not even know what Akira is . The Kanye influence is evident as is Chronicle but during in its time in the 80s it was a niche anime and wasn't as successful as it became later on.

It's really no bigger than Spirited Away which won an Academy Award and had critical acclaim all over the US

And you have your rappers mixed. Sugarhill is the old (Speed Racer) while Busta is newer (Akira).

But I'd bet more people old and young know "hip hop the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop, you dont stop" more than "Put your hand were my eyes can see."

I've never seen Akira, but I've seen every episode of Voltron and Speed Racer. Where can I see Akira online?

the directors reference it themselves by name, so whether or not we see it; they let us know its there.

Where do you see Spirited Away referenced in forms of pop culture today?

AKIRA broke ground for anime, animation , manga & the genre of sci-fi/action.

I wasn't doing a relative comparison I was just saying that Speed Racer, a TV show with more exposure (Busta Rhymes) might been more seen and recognizable than the Sugar Hill Gang (AKIRA) however what Sugar Hill Gang/AKIRA did for the genre in terms of foundation/importance/legacy is more fruitful than Busta Rhymes/Speed Racer (not knocking the great Bussa Bus tho).

Dont get me wrong Busta Rhymes/Speed Racer is great in its own right but as far as the long lasting impact...AKIRA got it.

not really. like the Camron example, it might just have been Hype William's idea. Hype put a clip from Gummo in Belly, so I think it's clear he's an underground movie head

But Gits which is pretty influential in itself had a larger influence. (Damn I'm getting tired of that word )

It won an Oscar and changed the way Anime movies were distributed in the states. That's real impact.

The bolded it did not.

You could argue that what Busta did for Music Videos was bigger than Rappers Delight but that's whatever.

Dont get me wrong Busta Rhymes/Speed Racer is great in its own right but as far as the long lasting impact...AKIRA got it.
Let's see the movie finally get greenlit like Speed Racer did. Hype Williams was even on board the Speed Racer movie so it's like I'm saying their influences aren't that far apart.

Kanye's an anime head if I remember. But I don't really know who came up with the idea for the video.

matrix creators stole the matrix from a Black woman, they can say what they want about what "inspired" them, but we know where they got that shyt from
