The coup is more anti French colonialism/imperialism with all their evil deeds in Africa and Haiti rather than pro Putin and Russia as the western media is trying to frame it. France moved their military base from Mali to Niger after they got kicked out and the U.S. has two bases there and still Nigerien terrorists have been lighting Northern Nigeria up for some years now. Thus we can plainly see who their sponsors are.

Supporters of the coup in Niger attempted to storm the French embassy on Sunday after marching through the capital waving Russian flags and chanting the name of Vladimir Putin.

Thousands of backers of the military junta gathered outside the diplomatic mission of former colonial power France, stoning the premises and setting the door on fire.

As crowds chanted “long live Putin” and “down with France”, some supporters attempted to storm the entrance, before the crowd was dispersed by Nigerien soldiers firing tear gas.

Emmanuel Macron warned that anyone who attacked French nationals or diplomats would meet “immediate and intractable” retaliation.

Niger had been seen as the last reliable partner for the West in efforts to battle the jihadists in Africa’s Sahel region, where Russia and Western countries have vied for influence. France has 1,500 soldiers in the country who conduct joint operations with the Nigeriens.

In the third coup to fell a leader in Africa’s the Sahel in as many years, Mohamed Bazoum, Niger’s elected president, has been held by the military since Wednesday.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the powerful presidential guard, has declared himself leader.

On Sunday at an emergency meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) said it was suspending relations with Niger and authorised the use of force if the president was not reinstated within a week.

“In the event the authorities’ demands are not met within one week, take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Such measures may include the use of force. To this effect, the chiefs of defence staff of Ecowas are to meet immediately,” Omar Alieu Touray, president of the Ecowas commission, said after the meeting.

Last year, Ecowas leaders agreed to create a regional security force to intervene against jihadists and prevent military coups, but details on the force and its funding are still unclear.

Any intervention would mark the first time Ecowas has turned to military action in its history.

In a statement read out on national television on Saturday evening, Niger junta member Amadou Abdramane said the summit’s aim was to “approve a plan of aggression against Niger, in the form of an imminent military intervention in Niamey”.

The intervention would be “in co-operation with African countries who are not members of the regional body and certain Western nations”, he added.

President Mohamed Bazoum was democratically elected two years ago in Niger’s first peaceful transfer of power since independence from France in 1960.

The coup leaders said they overthrew him because he wasn’t able to secure the nation against growing jihadi violence.

But some analysts and Nigeriens say that was a pretext for a takeover that is more about internal power struggles than securing the nation.

“Everybody is wondering: why this coup? That’s because no one was expecting it. We couldn’t expect a coup in Niger because there’s no social, political or security situation that would justify that the military take the power,” Prof Amad Hassane Boubacar, who teaches at the University of Niamey, told the Associated Press news agency.

He said Mr Bazoum wanted to replace General Tchiani, who is now in charge of the country.

While Niger’s security situation is dire, it is not as bad as neighbouring Burkina Faso or Mali, which have also been battling an Islamic insurgency linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

On Saturday, Josep Borrell, the European Union diplomatic chief said the EU would not recognise the putschists, and announced the indefinite suspension of security cooperation with Niger with immediate effect, as well as budgetary aid.

The United States - which has about 1,000 troops in Niger - has offered Mr Bazoum Washington’s steadfast support and warned those detaining him that they were “threatening years of successful co-operation and hundreds of millions of dollars of assistance”.

Landlocked Niger often ranks last in the United Nations’ Human Development Index, despite vast deposits of uranium.

It has had a turbulent political history since gaining independence in 1960, with four coups as well as numerous other attempts - including two previously against Mr Bazoum.

South Africa's Julius Malema celebrates 10 years of the EFF

Julius Malema
Despite his dismal performance in school and divisive nature, the firebrand leader of South Africa's second-largest opposition party, Julius Malema, has become a symbol of success for his legion of supporters.

This is largely because he has built from scratch his own political party, the left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which has become a political force that cannot be ignored 10 years after he founded it.

At the same time, Mr Malema has graduated from university with a BA in communication and African languages, and an honours degree in philosophy.

The 42-year-old is currently registered for a master's degree at the highly respected Witwatersrand University.

Few thought he would achieve this - after all, he was the subject of ridicule when his final-year school results were leaked in 2008, showing that he barely scraped through with a below average pass.

An outspoken and controversial politician accused of promoting hate speech, he faced insults about his poor mathematics and woodwork results but said he did not let those define him because he "had no aspirations of being a carpenter but wanted to be an activist and politician".

He previously admitted to failing two grades in high school because he "got too excited after joining Cosas" - the Congress of South African Students movement which had been formed to fight the racist system of apartheid.

White-minority rule ended in 1994, when the African National Congress (ANC) - which was at the forefront of the campaign against apartheid - won South Africa's first democratic election.

Now Mr Malema is seen as something of a trendsetter, with an increasing number of politicians and celebrities finishing school while others are furthering their studies, though none have cited him as an inspiration .

"It is only through education that we'll be able to reclaim black pride," Mr Malema once said.

Earlier this year, Mr Malema told his supporters that they had to have a matric (school-leaving) certificate, if they wanted to be party leaders.

"We can't be worse than the ANC… Go back to school if you want to lead the EFF or the country."

Around 60% of South Africans live below the poverty line

Youth unemployment in South Africa is currently at a shocking 51% and young people, particularly unemployed graduates, are desperate for better opportunities.

"I have a teaching degree but I have been sitting at home, relying on a government grant because there are not enough vacancies for inexperienced job seekers," said Nobesuthu Khoza, who graduated four years ago.

Many young people disagree with Mr Malema's style of politics - which has led to fist-fights in parliament, and attempts to prevent President Cyril Ramaphosa from delivering keynote speeches - but they still respect him.

"I'll be voting for the first time in 2024 and I think the EFF is a popular choice for most young people in this country but I don't like the party's disruptive behaviour in parliament," said Siyabonga Mvelase, a university student based in Johannesburg.

This disruptive behaviour has also occurred in some South African cities, including the economic heartland of Johannesburg, where Mr Malema and his EFF have emerged as political kingmakers.

This comes after the ANC lost its outright majority in local elections in 2021, resulting in coalitions being formed to govern cities such as Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria.

The EFF has often held the balance of power, making and breaking coalition governments.

This has led to accusations that Mr Malema - like other politicians - is playing political games rather than focusing on the need to tackle the myriad problems facing residents, from bad roads to high crime.

Some analysts believe that this will cost Mr Malema votes in next year's general election. The latest Ipsos opinion poll puts the party's support at around 13%, a slight increase from the 11% it obtained in the last election in 2019 but still a distant third nationwide.

He has been repeatedly accused of hate speech. He's been dragged to court by civil rights group AfriForum after the organisation filed a complaint to have the two songs Dubul'ibhunu (Shoot the Boer) and Biza a ma'fire brigade (Call the Fire Brigade) declared hate speech and unfair discrimination.

But the poll also records a slump in the ANC's support, from 57.5% in the election to around 50%, raising the prospect of a coalition government at national level - and Mr Malema becoming a political kingmaker there too.

Derided by his critics as a populist and a political demagogue, Mr Malema was once the leader of the youth wing of the ANC, where he played a pivotal role in catapulting Jacob Zuma to the presidency but later the two fell out, leading to Mr Malema's expulsion. As EFF leader, he was a major figure in the anti-Zuma campaign after an inquiry found the then president had breached his office by using government money to upgrade his private residence.

Many believed that his expulsion in 2012 meant that his political career was buried, but what later that year became known as the Marikana massacre - the police killing of 34 mineworkers striking for better pay - gave birth to the EFF.

Mr Malema was the first politician to visit the Lonmin-owned platinum mine, portraying himself as the champion of poor workers and launching the EFF in 2013, with a pledge to nationalise key sectors of the economy - including mines and banks.

Women mourn as family members of the 34 people who died when police opened fire on strikers at the Lonmin platinum mine north west of Johannesburg on August 16, 2013 gather at the scene of the bloody shooting to cleanse the ground

The killing of the mineworkers was the worst atrocity committed by police since apartheid ended
On Wednesday, he returned to a settlement near the mine, where poor people live, as part of events to mark the EFF's 10th anniversary.

The party slaughtered 15 cows and brewed traditional sorghum beer to "appease the ancestors".

"We were born the moment the blood of the workers was soaked in this land," said Mr Malema to the thousands of his supporters who had gathered to hear him speak.

"Today, we are here to dance and celebrate so that the enemy looking at us from a distance must feel the chest pains because they said the EFF would not last, but we are still here 10 years down the line," he added.

Known in the EFF as the commander-in-chief, Mr Malema has promised to keep fighting for "economic freedom" - something that most black people have not attained almost three decades after the end of white-minority rule.

His critics say that his policies, especially nationalisation, are widely discredited, and will lead to economic disaster - not freedom.

Voters will give their verdict in next year's general election, but for now Mr Malema is in buoyant mood, holding on Saturday a "festival of the poorest of the poor" as the climax of the EFF's 10th anniversary celebrations.

AfDB grants €14 million loan to finance science park in Cabo Verde

Pedro Mbinza
July 31, 2023 08:29

The park, which functions as a special economic zone with tax incentives and import duties, has two campi and is expected to attract ICT professionals from across Africa.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Cabo Verde recently signed a €14 million loan agreement to improve the country's Technology Park and make it more resilient to climate change to support business development.

The park, which functions as a special economic zone with tax incentives and import rights, has two campi, one in the capital, Praia, and the second on the island of São Vicente, and is expected to attract ICT professionals from across Africa.

Cabo Verde's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Olavo Avelino Garcia Correia, signed the loan agreement, expressing his enthusiasm for the project's transformative potential.

"Our goal is to transform Cape Verde into a digital nation, with a circular economy, and Praia's technology parks are part of this important government strategy", he said.

The AfDB director for Industrial and Commercial Development, Abdu Mukhtar, said that “the next generation of African talent does not need to look for opportunities abroad, as Cabo Verde has the necessary infrastructure and a political support system to cultivate their dreams and ambitions in their homeland”.

“The African Development Bank had granted a loan of 31.59 million euros to finance the first phase of the state-of-the-art technology park, which is already transforming the country into an innovative regional center for information and communication”, says the institution, in a statement to which FORBES AFRICA LUSÓFONA had access.

As part of the second phase, as said in the note, the center will be equipped to operate with renewable energies and — under a public-private partnership — equipped with two data centres.

Cabo Verde's ICT platform will launch a €1 million start-up capital fund to invest in around 20 innovative Cape Verdean companies. It will provide more than 50 tech start-ups across Africa with integration grants of at least €5,000 each.

There are also plans to collaborate with universities and international companies to extend soft skills training to 300 young Africans over the next three years, as well as to help them prepare to secure the jobs that will be created within the framework of the 4th industrial revolution.

Gaborone reiterates interest in AngoSat-2 services

The Government of Botswana reiterated its interest in benefiting from the services of the Angolan satellite Angosat-2, successfully launched in October last year, at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.

July 23, 2023

The desire was expressed in Gaborone by the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications of Botswana, Thulagano Segokgo — within the framework of the visit of the president of Angola João Lourenço — during a meeting with his Angolan counterpart, the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira.

Thulagano Segokgo said that Botswana is also interested in connecting with Angola through fiber optics, similarly to what it did with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

For his part, Mário Oliveira made it known that Angola is available to establish this partnership with Botswana and — to this effect — revealed that a delegation of Angolan technicians will travel to Botswana for this purpose. The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication also held a working meeting with the Chancellor of the University of Botswana.

Botswana's first intention for AngoSat-2 services was expressed in February by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Botswana, David Norris, during a meeting held with the Angolan ambassador to Botswana, Beatriz de Morais.

David Norris also showed — on this occasion — interest in establishing a partnership with the Agostinho Neto University, in which the target would be the creation of a project aimed at training Angolan students in Botswana. AngoSat-2 is a communications satellite launched on October 12, 2022, at orbital position 23E, to provide available space capacity in C band transponders in megahertzs (MHz) and Ku band transporters in megabits per second (Mbps).

The in-orbit tests were successfully completed in November 2022 and — in January of this year — the test of telecommunications services was successfully completed, with emphasis on the provinces of Cabinda, Uíge, Luanda, Cuando Cubango, Moxico, Huíla and Lunda Sul.

The device has a commercial capacity that boils down to 6 transponders in C band, which cover the whole of Africa, with emphasis on the SADC region (of which Botswana is a part of), where it has 24 bands of Ku and five transponders of C band.

The satellite also covers part of southern Europe. Due to these characteristics, AngoSat-2 is considered a satellite with high transmission rates; in other words, it guarantees greater bandwidth for data services, with emphasis on the Internet.

With an expected service life of up to 15 years, AngoSat-2 is one of the projects of the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN), a body assigned to the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication built following an agreement signed between Angola and Russia in 2009. The GGPEN is the national institution responsible for operating the satellite and the wholesale marketing of its capabilities in the national and international market.
