Ghana’s economy will top Africa in 2018

By Business Desk - January 16, 2018

Ghana is tipped to lead Africa as the fastest growing economy in 2018 with a growth rate of eight per cent as a result of increased oil and gas production, which boosts exports and domestic electricity production.

In its latest report dubbed: “Global Economic Prospects: Sub-Saharan Africa,” the World Bank has forecasted that growth in Sub-Saharan Africa will pick up at 3.2 percent in 2018, and Ghana will lead the economies in Africa with eight per cent followed by Ethiopia and Tanzania, which is expected to grow at 7.2%

Ghana’s economic growth, which had slowed from 4.0% in 2014 to 3.7% in 2015, recover to 5.8% in 2016 and 8.7% in 2017, following consolidation of macroeconomic stability and implementation of measures to resolve the crippling power crisis.

However the forecasted recovery in economic growth in 2018 will depends on fiscal consolidation measures remaining on track, quick resolution of the power crisis, two new oil wells coming on-stream, and improved cocoa harvest and gold production.

“Growth in non-resource intensive countries is anticipated to remain solid, supported by infrastructure investment, resilient services sectors, and the recovery of agricultural production,” the report stated.

On the Sub-Sahara outlook, the bank said growth in the area was forecast to pick up to 3.2 per cent in 2018. It also predicated a moderate rise in commodity prices.

Per capita output, which was projected to shrink by 0.1 per cent in 2017, is also expected to increase to a modest 0.7 per cent growth pace over 2018-19.

“At those rates,” World Bank said “growth will be insufficient to achieve poverty reduction goals in the region, particularly if constraints to more vigorous growth persist”.

Growth in South Africa, the second biggest economy in Africa, which is projected to rise to 0.6 per cent in 2017, is expected to accelerate to 1.1 per cent in 2018. Africa’s biggest economy, Nigeria, which is forecasted to go from recession to a 1.2 per cent growth rate in 2017, will gain speed to 2.4 per cent in 2018, helped by a rebound in oil production.

Growth is forecast to jump to 6.1 per cent in Ghana in 2017 and 7.8 per cent in 2018 as increased oil and gas production boosts exports and domestic electricity production. However the bank noted that militants’ attacks on oil pipelines could hold the key.

“If militants’ attacks on oil pipelines in the country decreases further the Nigeria economic will grow further”

Protests rock Sudan's capital as bread prices skyrocket

KHARTOUM - Large protests rocked Sudan’s capital Khartoum on Tuesday in opposition to the government's recent austerity measures, which devalued its currency and removed wheat subsidies, causing the price of bread to spike.

Opposition groups vow that protests will continue until the government reinstitutes policies that subsidise (and lower) the price of basic goods, including bread. The protests began sporadically earlier in January after the government endorsed the 2018 budget that lifted subsidies on flour and electricity, and devaluated the local currency.

According to eyewitnesses, police forces have suppressed the protests through tear gas, batons and dozens of arrests.

Sudanese opposition parties, under the leadership of the communist party, have led the protests and called for the removal of President Omar Bashir, who has led Sudan for 29 years. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges for crimes against humanity and war crimes.

From where I stood, I saw security men on backup vehicles arresting the protesters and beating them

An eyewitness, Ahmed Abdul Gadir, told MEE that “more than 5,000 people have defiantly gathered in Khartoum's downtown streets, chanting anti-government slogans”.

“The protesters have gathered in many streets downtown, including the streets of Al-Gamhuria, Al-Baladiya, Al-Gasr, Al-Hurriya, Al-Gama’a and Jackson Square - the central bus station in the capital”.

The demonstrations have morphed into an amalgamation of different causes. Other opposition parties, youth and women movements joined the protests, voicing their discontent with Bashir.

The National Umma Party said in a press release on Tuesday that they will join the protests and promised to organise another march on Wednesday in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum.

“We had a big meeting on Monday, attended by representatives of many political parties and we agreed to organise another march on Wednesday in Omduram. We will do our best to expand the protests until we end the suffering of our people,” it stated.

The “No violence against women” organisation also announced its support for the protests, saying in a press release on Tuesday that they formed an umbrella group with seven other women groups.

“As women movements, we would like to express our full support to the peaceful protests against the economic measures that hit our people,” the umbrella group said in a statement.

MEE called a police station and other government officials, but didn’t get a comment at the time of publication.

I been waiting for this since I was 14 years old...
How old are you :ehh:? Sudan had a long history of mass protests in 20th century, but Bashir has managed to divide and rule so far. But all the elements are there for some sort of uprising.

Some videos of the protests so far. They're relatively small so far, and its not the first time Sudanese have protested in Khartoum. Around 2011, bigger numbers came out and they responded with heavy repression and arrests. Likely will be more of the same again.

23 going on 24. And I think I knew about the 2011 protest but forgot about it. I knew about Bashir because at 14 that was when I was getting into Egyptian/Nubian history and found out that he wanted to drown out Nubian history with the dams. When I dug deeper I found out this guy was a freaking genocidal maniac. Seriously if you are not Arabised then I don't know how you can survive in the Sudan. I'm surprised he hasn't tried to massacre the Nubians like has done with the Nuba people, Southern Sudanese and people in Darfur.

They want to boost Tourism in Victoria Falls. Right now it is mainly catered to Adults and they say there is a lot of opportunity if they can have things catered to entire families since children want a lot of things thus adults will spend more.
Very smart ass strategy. VERY smart... Who idea was this? Disney? Or the Zimbabwean govt? Either way very smart as fukk.

Obviously a move to boost tourism but I hope they keep Disney in check because they will seek to buy all of the wildlife ranges.

I`d rather see an African Branded amusement park come from this but the Disney brand is strong globally so there is that. Interested to see what comes from this and if they actually do some good business.

I believe it was their government. The next 5-10 years will be very interesting for that country.
