The Gupta family is an Indian-South African business family whose most notable members are the brothers Ajay, Atul, Rajesh "Tony" Gupta as well as Atul Gupta's nephew Varun Gupta.

In 2016 Atul Gupta became the 7th wealthiest person in South Africa with an estimated net worth of R10.7 billion (US$ 773.47 million), based on JSE-listed holdings

In April 2013 a plane load of 217 guests from India were cleared to land at the South African Air Force base at Waterkloof for the marriage of Vega Gupta to Aakash Jahajgarhia. This event caused a significant controversy that led to the African National Congress (ANC) and other political parties as well as theSouth African National Defence Union to denounce this use of the air force base. The ANC issued a statement calling for "those responsible for giving the family permission to come into the country without going through the normal channels be 'brought to book'".

Influence over Cabinet appointments
In 2016 a series of allegations of the Guptas' influence over appointments to the South African Cabinet came to the fore. Former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor claimed that in 2010 the Guptas had offered her the position of Minister of Public Enterprises, provided that she arranged for South African Airlines to drop their India route, allowing a Gupta linked company (Jet Airways) to take on the route.[21][40] She said she declined the offer, which occurred at the Guptas' Saxonwold residence, while President Zuma was in another room. This came a few days before a cabinet reshuffle in which minister Barbara Hogan was dismissed by Zuma.

The Sunday Times has reported that the Minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane, and then Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, David van Rooyen (who was controversially appointed by President Zuma as Minster of Finance in December 2015) met with members of the Gupta family in Dubai. Van Rooyen allegedly met with them only a few days after his unsuccessful appointment to be Minister of Finance on the 20 December 2015. Minister Zwane assisted in the sale of a large coal mine to a Gupta owned company.

Some Black South Africans lack any type of discernment. Outside of the sentimental argument of other African countries aided and assisted ANC freedom fighters to topple the apartheid regime, other arguments can be made to make this type of xenophobic behavior look dumb. A great number of foreigners runs "spazza" shops which is basically small stands which sell snacks, canned goods, bread at a discounted price than groceries at a proper grocery outlet.

They are NOT taking any jobs by opening up these shops and a whole lot more deal in the informal economy because it is extremely difficult to gain "papers" (right to live and work in SA). I have a cousin who spent 7 years in South Africa trying to get papers the right and legal way and eventually got so fed up with the process that he found himself in Canada and was able to gain legal documentation to live and work in Canada within 2 years.

Like previously mentioned, we don't see this type of constructive mobilization and energy (not that I advocate violence) toward the whites/Asians who still control an overwhelming majority of the wealth in that country due to a history of both plunder and systemic racism.

Zimbabwe ended up that way because Mugabe start to redistribute the land to his cronies and Black Zimbabweans were not educated in the practices of commercial farming which made Zimbabwe a net exporter of food. There needed to be a transition in the form of joint ventures or at least make an effort to educate the indigenous population so they can have the skills in taking over. I have not problem with the policy of land redistribution (it's ill gotten) but African govts. are corrupt and lack planning.

Seeing his behavior and that of his political party/entourage today in 2017 makes it hard to imagine a different outcome for Zimbabwe even without white interference. Dude's wife straight up said that even if he dies his name should still be on the ballot.
