Strongly disagree but it's whatever.

If a movie like transcended the average comic book film and have people debating what's real and what's not while having other too perturbed over its direction DESERVES those nods. That's the quintessential point of great writing and directing. The impact it causes by those who watched it.
Problem is even Phillips knows the comic book angle was BS. You can remove Thomas Wayne from the film and its something else totally.

Its a good movie. Phoenix performance makes it. Cinematography and sound are on point. However, its rehash after rehash of stuff we've seen before. Just has Joker slapped on it. Way too heavy handed. Phoenix deserves the oscar just for having not much to work with.

Not really. It's true that Phillips wanted to do something unlike comic book movies because he said as much but he still put a bunch of easter eggs and took scenes from previous comic books and adapted them to make it a Joker story. The scene on Murray is sourced from comic material as an example.

You do understand the job that a director does. He oversees EVERYTHING. He the one that tell Phoenix which take is the best. Tells the cinematographer how he wants it filmed. Tells the composer the tone he wants and is hands on involved in overseeing the creation of the entire picture.

And for something that you said was slapped together, he managed to transform a 40 million budget film into both one of the most profitable comic book film of all time and the most controversial. While maintaining the near impossible task of not REALLY telling a genuine origin story because Joker has no true origin. While touching the nerve onto the current American climate. Give the man his due. The movie wouldn't be what it is had it not been for his vision. Had it not been for him being inspired by Scorsese and paying homage as if that's suddenly sacrilegious. Something all filmmakers do. Something QT does in every film when it comes to Sergio Leone.

Quit the hate. This picture deserves the props for achieving the next to impossible.

i think they are setting us up for the okey doke / try to embarass joker and have it win 1 or 2 at most

Likely two. Phoenix and best score are definitely locks.

Mendes and Deakins got best director and cinematography. QT definitely best screenplay again (though I sense an upset).

I think this maybe one of the most balanced Oscar's in terms of wins. I do not see any one film running away with it.

All that is well and good but is it OSCAR worthy. No

There have been plenty of films that looked and sounded great, but weren't a great film :gucci:

We can give credit to him all day for him making a highly successful movie. He deserves his props, but that by no means was an oscar worthy script or direction :dwillhuh:

The pacing, the flow, the themes, etc were just mid..I kept thinking that Phillips did an admirable job. However, damn imagine if this was made with a really great director :ehh:

It was said how they were constantly rewriting/making up stuff on set and it felt that way. He knew where he wanted it to end, but how he got there...:patrice:

What's your stance that you didn't like it? That's fine.. the Academy is a large collective. Joker receiving this many nominations means it does have a lot of support in all areas of filmmaking but that doesn't mean it is going to win in all those areas. Often times a movie can rack up double digit noms and only win a couple categories.

Phoenix is great, but as plenty of people have already said, Joker is just a dumbed-down Taxi Driver. The movie is just fine, a stone cold 7/10. If it wins Best Picture, it won't be as bad as The Shape of Water or Green Book winning. But Parasite to me is far and away the best movie on the list.

I'm obviously of the mindset that Joker shouldn't be film of the year, but this was a good post.
