Tony La Russa said today he'd give Cabrera the edge for MVP because of his September #'s vs. Trout. Also said Trout reminded him of Mickey Mantle, but he's just wearing down a little bit this month.

I'd agree. I don't take the "all games mean the same" thing, especially because of the Cards going 18-8 last year to eke into the playoffs.

How does a September game matter more than a June game? It makes for more exciting television but the vlalue is not different

Exactly...Brewers have played lights out in August and September. Good thing those games are weighted higher than the first 4 months, and we're heading to the playoffs...wait, you mean that's not how it works? Hmm...

Same thing with the Dodgers, only in reverse. They've been in the Wild Card race based solely on how hot they started.

All that excitement on the final day last year could've been avoided had the Braves/Red Sox simply won a game they lost in June, or the Cardinals/Rays lost one in June.

But all game literally mean exactly the same....1/162 of the season. The order you win them in is IRRELEVANT as long as you win more than the other guys.

Also, you can not make the argument that team success is important and at the same time use Cabrera's September run. Used in combination, which MANY are doing, the argument collapses in on itself.

Cabrera is dominating right now, but the Tigers are 13-12 in September. That's a WORSE winning percentage than the rest of their season.

Because as the other half of that argument says, a player's numbers don't mean dikk if the team doesn't win.

I've got to run...but I plan on opening this shyt up more later :heh:

Theoretically they don't matter more, not like you get 1.5 wins instead of 1 ... that, I understand.

But I do feel like in the midst of a pennant race (or wild-card spot), winning these games are very important. It isn't even about exciting television, but winning games that you now have no luxury of losing.

The Reds can lose 5 in a row, and they'll be good. But if the Cards lose 5 in a row, they're out. So if a player on the Card produces at a high standard and is responsible for contributing more than his fair share to winning in these last days, it means a little more. In my eyes. This is just my opinion, I def. see the other side of the argument.

A player contributing "more than his fair share" to wins in May shouldn't be viewed as less important than someone doing it September...which is essentially what this does.

To be fair, I'm not entirely opposed to using this as a small factor of two player's are extremely close...but that simply isn't the case this year.

I had to suffer through the red sox game tonight with two diehards. Good lord, what a lame franchise. They did an "all fenway team" ceremony before the game, and there were lowlights aplenty: a bunch of people didn't show - Mike Lowell, Curt Schilling, and Wade Boggs among them; Roger Clemens, being the scumbag, shameless attention whore he is, actually did show up, and the fans cheered him (shame on them for not booing that piece of shyt); Babe Ruth made the team (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA); Dave Roberts was the honorary pinch runner; overall it was just dripping with wack juice.

Since Cabrera's team hasn't really taken advantage of his hot September (in essence, him not being that much of a factor), I'd have to agree.
