The Scot-Irish weren't considered white until the 1800s. Not until they were used as a buffer class between the Black slaves and cacs. Its why they were overpresented as the plantation overseers, slave catchers and eventually, law enforcement.
Race is a social construct, and so as society changes, so does the definition of race. Yes, the Irish are white, in 2023. But not in 1776. They were barely western European back then. They would agree as well.....the Irish hated most Europeans for centuries.

The Latino definition of "white" is like the American definition of "Black." In America, if you look remotely Blackish....and are treated as such, you're Black whether you want to be or not.
Whiteness in the United States really means Northwestern/Central Europe + Scandinavian and a Protestant Christian. Whites have evolved that definition to include new groups to keep whiteness from dying. How many Latinos really identify as Afro or Native American? Probably only happens when their physical appearance is so unambiguous that they can't claim otherwise.

It was a carryover from the Old World of the Catholic vs Protestant hate tbh. English speaking Protestant Americans did not want to be aligned with Gaelic speaking Scots and Irish until they needed them. Irish in particular as the Scots always waffled when it came to the English while the Irish tended to be more consistent in their dislike.

You're not getting it. Our modern definition of "white" =/= the historical definitions of "white".
Yes, the Irish are white.... in 2023. They weren't always white. They were called "******s of Europe" in the 1800s and up until then, the Irish were regularly enslaved as indentured servants. Part of the reason why many of us have Irish last names and genetics is because we were thrown in the same lot until traditional Western cacs changed their mind in let the Irish in. The same was done with the Italians in the 1700s. The Dutch, in the 1600s.
