Many people feel that pastors represent their congregation and want their pastors to be taken care of. A pastor is aspirational for a congregation in that way. If a congregation is fine with their preacher living in luxury, because they feel it represents them, then that’s entirely on that congregation.
With that said, I come from a denomination where the *priest’s* salary is set by the canons (laws) of the Diocese and approved by a governing vestry board. So the priest can’t take it upon himself to pay himself more or to set his own salary. He has no say in his salary at all. It’s already set at a base and every year will get a cost of living adjustment. Interestingly, our priest also presided over a historically wealthy congregation and is a real estate development CEO himself. So yes, he drives foreigns and lives in a mansion in Obama’s neighborhood but his money comes from his business not from his salary as Priest and the mansion is owned by the church. Once he retires, he has to leave the mansion and the new priest will take up residency. I sat on the board of my own church and helped set budgets and know the salary that was allocated to the Priest and although in the six figures (after 30+ years of tenure) it was not enough to maintain an expensive lifestyle.
The problem that you see is that many black pastors, especially mega church pastors, start churches not within denominational structures. So there is no denominational oversight or hierarchy that is providing oversight. A lot of these pastors churches are their businesses. And with that, they are basically CEO, have a lot of power, and can do what they want, like set their own salaries. That’s where people feel that they may be taking advantage. But when your church is not part of a denominational structure or have to adhere to the laws of a denomination then that’s what you get, a church that has no top oversight where all the power is centralized in the hands of the pastor. If people don’t like that, they need to switch to churches within legitimate Christian denominations that dictate the policies of how they are ran.
