If you are referring to the owner's wife beating the main character and facilitating the sell off her mixed children by her husband, it's because no woman wants a philandering husband and evidence of his indiscretion. Women blame the other woman. Slavery was a peculiar institution that pitted society against each other and destroyed humanity. In a system of patriarchy where women had less access to capital and resources, husbands were like Gods and could literally do no wrong (in a sense a lot of women today with traditional religious values still uphold their husbands to this standard though their treatment isn't reciprocated. The wife didn't see her husband as a predator. Also there were White women who helped her while she was hiding until she went to the North. Also she was hired by a White woman when she reached the North. I haven't read the book in years but it was complex.facts. and its true about them having resources. i hate when c00ns use that as an excuse and hold it against black women as if they both have equal access to wealth/ resources
