This thread reeks of revisionism. Mecca and the soul brother was voted the top album of its year.

Main ingredient was lightweight disappointing due to the softer vibe.

in 1992?
My vote went to the Chronic :myman:

I love those 2 albums alot because they sounded very differently.

Pete Rock was retarded back in the day with those beats

Chronic dropped in the middle of December 1992 so I count that as a 1993 album :manny:

thats still 1992.

even if you take it like that, Its hard to released some "album of the year" shyt when Nas and Biggie both dropped their debuts the year The Main Ingredient released.

Main Ingredient is the greatest produced Hip Hop album to me but I love when Pete had the sample changes during the last few bars of CL verses on Mecca along with the ill bridges!!

Sample laws/clearances changed the style of Mecca to Main!!

Mecca and the Soul Brother had some tracks on there. Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y) Lots of Lovin, Straighten It Out, and few other tracks were dope. Me personally I always liked the Main Ingredient more. The production on the Main Ingredient was smooth. Love that album. In the House, Caramel City, Searching, Check It Out, Take You There, The Main Ingredient, Escape, All the Places, and a few others off that album. Playing "Searching" cruising through the city at night time :win: Cl Smooth's delivery and flow on this album was

Did anybody else on here messed with the INI album? Pete Rock sampling Fela Kuti on Grown Man Sport . Production on this album by PR was dope.

The production on Center of Attention:drool:

Some of the beats Pete used on the little outro interludes around this time shyt on most producers whole careers.

It's crazy.

I'm bumping Mecca now. Act Like You Know is a slept on Pete joint. Hypnotic beat.

I'm a big fan of both, but I'm more apt to listen to The Main Ingredient.

It just comes down to mid-90s rap releases aging better than albums from any other time period.

Sonically, they are 2 different albums. Main Ingredient is a laid back album with more lavish (and you could argue better) production. But Mecca and The Soul Brother is the pure definition of a "truck thumpin" type of album. That joint came out in the summer of 92, and I remember nikkas riding around in the jeeps with the big sound system blasting songs like "Skinz", "The Basement", "For Pete's Sake", "Straighten It Out". And them songs use to ring off hard! So I think Main Ingredient is a better album to zone out too. But Mecca and The Soul Brother had more bangers that had the streets buzzin.

This here.
