Well you have to thing like with any building of muscle the muscle has to be stimulated beyond its current use. That is plain difficult for calves so a soccer player with all of that constant movement is doing just that.

Might be anecdotal but I seem to be seeing gains doing single leg movements and plyos.

i refuse to believe the "its all genetics" excuse, just by the fact your average soccer players has some diesel calfs. i know they weren't born like that

u know how many people i've seen with diesel calves who havent worked out a day in their life? plenty of people are just "born like that"....I've seen tons of soccer players with skinny calves too btw....u can add some size to them but for some cats, theres just no way u gonna get calves like this from just working out

some of us have the genetic potential of only these...notice the high insertions compared to the top guy

Yea, I'm going with genetics. usually if you have ridiculously small calves, you have potential to have a high vertical jump (I THINK.. someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm 5'8, 190ish. My calves have never been huge, but I can jump up and grab the rim. You may be on to something. :manny:

I got thick defined legs but can't jump for shyt. Most of the people I play ball with that can jump out the gym have the skinny legs. I read a report they did on npr about running. Most of the time you can determine who will win a marathon by the size of the runners ankles. they said if you strap ten pounds to your back it probably wouldn't make much of a difference in your run time. But add ten pounds to your legs and it's a big difference.

I have that Nate Robinson build with big calfs as well. I definitely can't jump like that nikka, but I was fast enough to run D1 track.

Calfs are mostly genetic like everyone else said, but playing football/running routes and doing those burst/sprints and cuts will definitely make them bigger. Also jumping rope and doing double unders, and running up big hills.
