“This is the president,” says the voice. “Who would you like to declare war on?”

“Diageo !” replies Swizz, without hesitation. Both of them immediately erupt into the sort of deep, guttural laughter shared only by old friends. They’re well on their way to that sort of relationship: “Mike Bacardi” is Mike Dolan, the CEO of Bacardi who recently hired Swizz as the company’s global creative director, a role in which he’ll manage a portfolio of some 200 brands, including Dewar’s Scotch, Grey Goose vodka and the flagship Bacardi rum.

A Grammy-winner once dubbed “the best rap producer of all time” by Kanye West, Swizz has penned beats for Whitney Houston and Jay Z, developed partnerships with brands including Reebok and Lotus, and regularly gets six-figure checks to perform as a rapper or DJ—part of the reason he raked in $10.5 million this year, good for the No. 19 spot on our Hip-Hop Cash Kings list

But the Bacardi gig could be his most lucrative yet. The multi-year, multimillion-dollar, incentive-laden pact includes a share of Bacardi’s profits (the privately-held company boasts annual revenue in excess of $5 billion). In exchange, Bacardi gets to bring Swizz’s cultural clout into its fold—along with his unorthodox approach to marketing.

From there, he began to spread his creative and business wings further. Swizz partnered with Reebok, where he launched a collection inspired by iconic Brooklyn artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. “I’m not coming in here as a big shoe icon or a celebrity,” he recalls. “I’m coming in as a student starting at a lower level because I wanted to have more respect.” He designed the Aston Martin Rapide, became a consultant for luxury watch company Audemars Piguet, and began working with luxury shoemaker Christian Louboutin. He would later curate a collection with Bally, a company he still works with. Perhaps most importantly, Swizz enrolled in and completed the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard Business School, where he built businesses like his No Commissions art project (more on that later)

Swizz on his chrome-colored Lotus Evora GTE: The inspiration came from art. Being a car collector, me and Dany had a conversation that with taking brand to the next level, we have to do things that are next level. I actually challenged Dany, if we can get a chrome color car we can start the big movement. Tonight we have a chrome colored car. When you see a chrome colored car you think, that’s a Lotus right there. It separates (Lotus) from all the cars on the road.

Swizz Beatz On Art and Cars: For me it all falls under the same — design, cars, fashion, movies, painting. My vision is to always make history, take things to the next level as much as possible. We live in a world that’s constantly changing. How can we change before the world changes? I do the same things with music. You take all the different languages and apply it to the automotive world. It takes the same effort to make a hit. To make a hit you have an idea in your head, you have to have a good scope of who you’re delivering the hit to, the demographic of the audience, and then from there you have to have a strong team. From the strong team we execute, then you have the results then after the results then you’ll know what you scored on your test.

Dany Bahar on Swizz Beatz’s New Job: We are the first real car company he worked for.

Swizz Beatz on working with Lotus: Lotus is by far the most hands on I’ve been inside the car world. Thanks to Dany and the amazing team we have, they allow me to also have a voice. It’s not just an endorsement, it’s a real partnership. Through these results we’re going to be able to change the way people see cars, the way people see the brand, the way all cultures come together.

Dany Bahar on Hiring Swizz Beatz: It’s not an endorsement. He’s very real. He’s come to the factory three or four times. We don’t have any other endorsements. He’s part of the family. We also decide to have Swiss Beatz edition made as part of his wishes.

Swizz Beatz on Driving With Dany Behar: Yes. This guy’s crazy. I drove very fast. He was faster. He races every day with a suit on. This is his racing outfit. (Swizz Beatz points to Dany Bahar’s suit.)

Dany Bahar on Swizz Beatz in the Lotus Design Studio: If one artist tells the other artist what to do, you can imagine what’s going to happen. He’s definitely sort of a design doctor. When it comes to limited editions for a particular market we’re not very familiar with, he knows how to address his customers, his fans. Then it becomes ‘Swizz fix this. We need to get this right. The color of skin, the bumper here the bumper there.’”

Swizz Beatz On Where He Gets His Ideas: Two places – the shower and the car.

Swizz Beatz on Lotus Designers: We don’t get in each other’s way. I don’t do what other designers are trying to do. It’s still an open space for creativity. It’s the small things that count.
