Funny thing with me is that in my high school, swimming was required for graduation; we had this big Olympic sized pool in the basement. But I never had the class assigned to me, so I was like
I wish I had taken it earlier. I learned because my kids took to water early, and because I didn't know how to swim, I couldn't get in the water with them.
I found a cat on Craigslist who gave me lessons for $25 an hour at the local aquatics and fitness center. The main thing he helped me with was floating, and then kicking to get moving. And then after that, the types of strokes (freestyle, breaststroke). All in all, it took me about five lessons before I was good to go. I wasn't trying to become a pro or anything. Plus I had fractured my ankle the previous winter, so any type of running or high impact cardio was a no-no.
The main problem I have (and still do) is breathing; getting my head far enough out of water so I can take a breath. So I copped this joint right here:
Amazon.com: FINIS Swimmer's Snorkel (Yellow): Sports & Outdoors
Helps me really well with breathing. I take in air through my mouth with the snorkel, and then when I breathe out, I exhale through my nose.
