There's a picture out there that shows you completing classic mode with each character will let you fight the character you want to get.
(i.e beating Classic mode with Young Link let's you challenge Richter to get him)

Short hops is much harder confirmed. I'm reading it's 3 frames now so you can either do it that way or jsut press jump and A at the same time to short hop.

I need to get my main Lucina to test it. Inkling feels good too.
