It depends on the type of jazz you're into the most. He has some wild, free jazz stuff that may not appeal to many people. He also has a lot of spiritual jazz, big band stuff, more traditional albums etc.

My favorite Sun Ra album is Lanquidity.


That same year (1978) he also released another album I really like, New Steps. Which includes one of my favorite Coltrane covers.

I really gotta be in the mood to listen to his stuff but I always go back to those. Start with “Jazz In Silhouette” to really get a peak into his mastery then check out his more experimental stuff, “Space Is The Place” and “Magic City”.
