I would assume not as the time line changed well before she was born.Don't really care about Sulu being gay in continuity but I will be a raging mad nerd if his kid is not a little girl named Demora.
George Takei calling it 'unfortunate'. Says it going against original creator vision, and perhaps a new-original character who happens to be gay should've have been created
Sorry for not posting the article, not on my laptop at the moment. Here'sthe link tho
George Takei Reacts to Gay Sulu News: "I Think It's Really Unfortunate"
So critique saying it was pandering does have a point nowReading the whole article, I understand where he's coming from with regards to Roddenberry and he was aware that this was going to happen and felt like the people on the film hustled him, which is fukked up

But not pandering would be making a new gay character and not used an establish ine and turn them gay just bc despite the original actor whom just so happen to be openly gay being against it.He doesn't say it's pandering. He said straight up that he's down with them making a gay character. He even wanted gene to make one back in the day but gene knew he couldn't get away with it. If they wouldn't air the episode or Kirk and Uhura kissing down south there's no way they'd air an episode with a gay character.
He just doesn't think it should be sulu because he wants the characters to remain true to Gene's vision

Makes sense. Star Trek has always been about pushing forward equality. Kirk and Uhura had the first interracial kiss on television and there's always that episode of Next Gen dealing with sexuality and gender politics. Plus it's a nice shoutout to George Takei. Doesn't change anything dramatic about him but continues the vein of the franchise
