Unfortunately Afro-Americans continue to receive substandard health care well below the already below average coverage rates that for a developed nation we have (and mental health care is probably the worst ran portion of our health system in America unfortunately ) this is just another reason why Universal health care is sorely needed in this nation for a very large proportion of our population

It's no surprise that the suicide rate among black males is rising. The only surprise is that more of us are NOT killing ourselves. As much bullshyt that we have to deal with, we should have the highest suicide rate in the world.

I wouldn't say it's that simple

It could certainly play a role but is just one variable in the overall daily assault on the minds of black people within the system of white supremacy

Black youth aren't given the resources to develop a strong sense of self worth and even when taught history are lead to believe it begins and ends with slavery. That along with growing levels of poverty, lack of opportunity, and the media portrayal of black people as a whole affecting children who don't have any positive references on what it means to be a black man (or woman) in society. Is it really a surprise our children are suffering from depression?

And when you try to talk to your parents about this depression, they just brush it off. Essentially, all these boys see is, "nobody gives a damn".

I bet most of those boys were very smart kids. Just couldn't hold out long enough to get to shore.
