Street Fighter 5 began its life underwhelming fans everywhere, which caused the game to fall below Capcom's initial sales expectations, but things have continued to improve and truck on to find eventual success.

Now as of June 30, 2022, Street Fighter 5 has finally become Capcom's best selling single release of a fighting game in their history.

The updated Platinum Titles page for Capcom confirms SF5 now sits at 6.6 million copies sold after 6 and a half years on the market, making it #8 in the company's rankings overall.

That now edges out Street Fighter 2 on the Super Nintendo's 6.3 million units, which held that record for basically 30 years.

means nothing in this era honestly. the base version is severely discounted to like 5 bucks same as tekken so of course it's gonna have the highest numbers. capcom did the same shyt with re6, they said it was the best selling resident evil ever but it went straight to the discount bin like immediately after release

I mean, theres over 5 different versions of street fighter 2 and its been re-released more times than anyone can count over the past 30 years. Maybe in 2046 we will better be able to compare the two

you can google this sf4 wasn't moving units being that people wasn't on fighting games for years before it dropped. Not fighting popularity im talking about from a pure sales standpoint.
It might not have been a monster in terms of pure sales but it sold enough to revive the fighting game genre and showed the industry that fighting games were still viable.

It was popular enough to shake up the industry and sold enough that other companies started to drop fighting games again.

It might not have been selling GTA numbers but it was a huge success sales wise.

Also you have to remember that arcades were still somewhat prominent especially in Japan

Branding is so important, this game should have been dead after how they released it. If it were any other fighting game franchise they wouldn't make it past season 1.
