That's how things are now. Back when I was coming up, I would get picked-on for being into books, having good grades, and speaking well by cats in my class/neighborhood and age-group. I had fights for about three months straight in 4th Grade before they realized I wasn't a punk and wasn't going to allow them to disrespect me or my family.
I'm not sure when that whole paradigm changed, but sometime in the early/mid-80's, it became 'cool' in our community to be into scholastic achievement. Personally, I attribute that shift to the Nation of Gods and Earths.

These types of songs directly preceded the 'Conscious Era'. It was all just simple 'party rhymes' before that, then Rakim dropped and changed the whole hip-hop soundscape. You HAD to have a decent grasp of vocabulary and history to even understand what some cats were droppin' on wax.

Growing up in a white neighborhood and enjoying rock music (which blacks invented btw) in addition to Hip hop as well as an expanded vocabulary and good grades I got called out for acting white all the time. It bugged me but looking back on Facebook at those a$$holes they are still working fast food jobs with 8 kids going no fkn where.
