Wright is fantastic, but so is Malachi Kirby. Both should get recognition.

I wasn't even sure Darcus's wife was black before she spoke, but she turned out to be realer than most of them.

Wanted to catch up on this Sunday but realized in time that BBC is airing these weekly (I first thought this was only on Prime) so I watched Red, White & Blue first and only afterwards Mangrove and Lovers Rock.

I could already tell from RWB and Mangrove that this was McQueen delving back into his old style of Hunger and Shame with the more documentary style realism. Those two films play very well together given the focus on true stories of police racism, with RWB focusing on the inside of the police force and Mangrove focusing on its effect on everyday citizens. Both also feature more traditional narratives albeit of course exceptionally well acted and directed.

Lovers Rock is the return of the real McQueen though, a wonderful mood piece showcasing a single night of a local block party with a cast of largely unknown strangers having interactions throughout the night. The brehs above already posted about it but the 'Silly Games' scene is magical. Very reminiscent of Spike Lee putting extended focus on 'It's Too Late To Turn Back Now' in BlacKKKlansman (but quite possibly this did it better).

Must watch series. :wow:

And last but not least:

This one feels like a TV ep :russell:
Act like you're putting people onto something but be insanely wrong about it, brehs. Most trash opinion of the year.:why:

Watched both episodes this weekend with one of my PAAGs in attendance. Had to explain a few things to her. But she didn't realise how scummy the UK was. She's from Korea so they just get all the sparkly parts of UK history and certainly very little black UK history.

Mangrove was fantastic. My dad always said in those days you had to look out for two groups the teddy boys and the police. Powerful stuff, could feel the hopelessness and the rage coming through the screen.

Lovers Rock though was sublime. Flashed me back to the family parties of my youth. The sound systems and the bass thumping. Lovers Rock and reggae just have a revitalising effect on me. Everytime I hear them.

I just got lost in how good the costumes and looks were. Would have loved to have watched this with my uncles and aunts to see their POVs as this was their youth.
