I'll chalk this up to "if an unnamed Jedi would've whooped Anakin's ass George would've ruined some folk's childhoods but since JJ did it and 'omg practical effects' suddenly leaving stuff like this for the EU to explain is ok".

Still not sure what the added value was of yet another person knocking Finn to the ground right after we get an epic scene of orange Yoda giving him the lightsaber and him igniting it on a closeup shot.

He's one of those that thinks a novel 90% of the viewing audience has never/will never read is good enough to cover the numerous plot holes in the film.

Technically the random ass whooper has relevance but being that the movie never makes that known, 90% of the public will never know that. Same with Finn allegedly being a competent soldier. Apparently it was only important to state that in the novel and have him be a prop piece to aid in the character growth of Rey and Poe in the film.

I guess it helped prop up Han, or whoever shot random ass whooper. It did nothing for Finn but show he was weak, a common theme throughout the film.

Most of the time when films go out of their way to show a character is weak and scared like that, the redemption/ character growth moment is at the end. Instead they chose to have him get his ass whooped a final time and lose consciousness in order to remind us for the 19th time that Rey was a badass.

I'm not nearly as upset at how Finn was handled as it seems most people here are, but this sequence in particular is one that just irks the fukk out of me to this day. It just doesn't make sense from a storytelling perspective, since seeing Finn get handled so easily by a random trooper robs his duel with Kylo of the tension it could have had.

We should've seen Finn catching BODIES with that saber as spectacularly as Poe was in the air, along with a line or two from Phasma or Hux about how much potential he showed as a cadet. That way, when he steps up to fight an injured Kylo we're thinking "he could actually win " instead of "nikka, please "
