I think it makes no sense in the general context of the series (the war versus Klingons) but it did make sense in a 'this is a light-hearted homage to older Star Trek standalone' episodes kind of way.
Personally I enjoyed the episode a lot, but I've always been a sucker for slightly less serious standalone episodes in serialised shows. BSG had some really good ones in Season 2 that also added to the shows story and characters. This one does the same.
My main problem with the show is how poorly they far in the background the war is. It really doesn't feel like there is a war going on at all other than people referencing it or the Klingon scenes. BSG and The Expanse bring that 'at war' feeling alive way better.
Yeah. These motherfukkas are literally dancing to Wyclef over and over weeks after Lorca bodied a few Klingons right on one of their ships. On the strength of their cloaking alone, the Klingons should be pulling off little sneak attacks since the war as somewhat united most of their houses.
and I get that Mudd lives on in TOS but dude killed Lorca 50 times in the time loop and was trying to “sell off” Discovery to the Klingons. Dude spent zero mins in the brig lol.
But the episode was a decent won and established a few things. It’s confirmed that Michael is likely a virgin, never probably been kissed but she’s expressing feelings for someone else. We indirectly see that sadistic side of Lorca’s nature when Mudd was in his room looking thru all the weird shyt he’s been holding onto. And, they seem to be pushing the angle of the gay doctor and dude from engineering. They both come off as the only (that we’ve seen) voice of consistent reason on the ship.
