This is generally not a good thing. Especially for Black students, because it increases the enrollment gaps which then impacts the income, wealth, and network gaps. Black student enrollment has already decreased during Covid and I fear that trend will continue.

However, I will acknowledge that the current system is messed up with the debt burden and underemployment being prevalent among Black graduates. And a shift in narratives regarding the utility of a college education would be beneficial.

But even with the issues present, I am not confident that decreased college enrollment will quickly lead to a shift in the trades and other alternatives. Plus, for all the talk of heading back to the trades, blue-collar workers, in general, have struggled with wage stagnation for decades now. And it's important to note that most Black people outside the south live in expensive metros where wage stagnation is coupled with higher housing costs.

And so, I think decreased enrollment is a net negative, but I am curious to figure out what students are doing instead of heading to college.

Millennials got fukked with college. Most of our parents didn't go to college but pushed us to go and gave an entire generation no guidance whatsoever. There was no choose your major wisely or maybe go to community college to save. It was just go to college, you have to go or you'll certainly be a failure. I did my two years at community college and didn't go beyond that because I didn't know what I wanted to go for and I didn't want to waste my money. Many of my peers weren't so lucky. They listened to their parents and believe it out not, teachers that either had no idea what the were talking about or offered zero guidance other than you have to go to college.

It would be fine if black people had a great pipeline into say plumbing, electrician work, etc that are staples. Or new entertainment pipelines into twitch or YouTube. But those areas are fraught for numerous reasons having to do with wealth, risk taking, and racism. Being an above average software developer takes good math skills, expectations at home, and typically college so that's a tough one.

No wonder they say median black wealth will be 0 by 2053. What a clusterfukk. shyt like this is what pisses me off the most.

I don’t like this but we’ll see what happens.

College educations seem to define Millenials but not Gen Z.

I am sort of thinking that Millenials are going to replace the Boomers and Gen Z is going to be the next Gen X where they focus less on their careers and more on Family and in their case social media.

Gen Z aren't having sex, are awkward as fukk, and are depressed shut ins (if not possibly more racist than millennials because they got taken in by internet culture from *****). Honestly, I think they may be more fukked than millennials on a basic level.

Aren’t having sex yet.

They are still a young group, in time just by default they’ll start having kids. The women from that group might hook up with more established millenials as they begin to replace the boomers..... Then again no one is having kids like they use to because late stage capitalism, even with tax breaks make it harder.

As for them being more racist. No doubt, imagine becoming aware of politics during the Trump era. I think just like Gen X will eventually, they are going to get dominated by the Millenials. The number of Millenials and their high level of education has them situated to move up faster once Boomers leave the market.

I have to say this every time I see a higher education thread in HL, even with issues in the system, higher education should be pushed to every black child.

It’s not exactly rocket science why ethnic groups with the highest household incomes also have the highest levels of education.

And it doesn’t even have to be STEM degrees either. A teacher can lead a comfortable middle class life and retire with a comfortable guaranteed pension.

interesting community colleges are hardest hit, is that for the entire 2012 - present period or just this past year (I can understand why this past year). CC's still have a value IMO since you can do some vocational or cert based programs thru them, but 4-yr UG, I don't blame these kids for opting out of that rat trap

good news on the surface, but the fact that community colleges have been the ones hit hardest when they provide great value isn't good news. although i wonder if the change in allowing community colleges to grant 4 year degrees like in florida (around 2010) has impacted who is considered a community college. florida had some of the biggest community colleges by enrollment in the country and now they're called X College or X State College instead of X Community College.
