I really enjoyed this, perhaps even more than The Visit. There was a cool psychological component and commentary about childhood abuse, and how it can have different affects on different people. But ultimately it's about how strong children are and how they come up with their own ways of surviving, some more dysfunctional than others. In that sense, I think this is Shyamalan's best flick since 'Sixth Sense'.
I also love the characters, the girls were strong and smart, but human and believable. It was a refreshing change. There were only two victim "duh" moments
the first kidnapping scene, when the girl figured out that the guy wasn't the dad before he even turned around. She should have jumped out while he was spraying the other two. But I'll chalk that up to her being in shock and being a lifelong victim of abuse. That's probably crippling in itself. But then the doctor lady realizes her patient is gone off the rails and investigates herself, instead of leaving and calling the police. That was ridiculous!
James McAvoy stole the show. Dude was switching characters like every five seconds sometimes, and he nailed it. There was a lot more humor than I was expecting, particularly his Hedwig character, which was just a funny little dude. I didn't find the twist that surprising at all. They laid hints about it from the beginning, so it really wasn't a twist. In fact
I was actually hoping for something a little more supernatural and drastic, but I guess he wanted to keep it realistic as possible.
So yes, this was really fun and engaging and suspenseful. Everything a thriller should be. That's 2 for 2. Shyamalan is on a roll, and that's surprising because I totally wrote him off after "Signs", "The Village" & 'The Happening'.
I'd give this a 8 out of 10 for its genre, maybe a 8.5? Definitely two thumbs up.
I didn't see them as smart. For example, the first girl who went "off the rail". If she was more patient in trying to escape. Instead of rushing knowing he was coming back. And even with the hero in the film. Getting on the walkie talkie with no real plan. He could have easily killed her. I thought she would have a plan but she was as dumb as her other friends.

Are you serious? You expect teenage girls to behave and react in a situation like this as if they were trained Rangers? LOL. Come on now!
And if you had a walkie talkie in your hands after being kidnapped and cut off from communication, would you really not try to use it? There's no plan when something like that just drops in your lap, and she had no idea where she was, so all she could do was radio her name.

No way. Not the way she did it. She had no idea where she was at. If anything, I would continue to manipulate that little boy and try to trick him. Heck, even wait for him to leave her alone in that room. She trick him enough to get him there. She could thought of something to use that walkie talkie while he wasn't around.
As far as the other girls, I didn't mind the mixed girl hitting him with a chair. As long as the other girl was on board. The 1st girl was just plain dumb. No way should she have tried to escape through the ceiling knowing he was going back and forth like that.

Saw this today. Worse movie I have ever seen. I mean logically, made no sense. The characters ran into the face of danger every single time. I tried to suspend my belief for the first 45 minutes. Was just a boring movie. Then it turned into a terrible movie because there was no link to reality at all.
The psychiatrist would never go alone to the zoo to meet with a patient after dark, specially if she suspects he is up to no good. She would call the police, or atlas inform the cab to wait on her while she goes inside And why the fukk does she go inside in the first place? The guy is obviously going to the zoo late at nite outside of regular work hours. Why didn't the girls try and get out of the car at the beginning? Cover your mouths. Hold your breaths or something. Then this n!gga turn into a bulletproof, wall climbing, flesh eating monster just cause his mind decided to? Really breh? Im cool with SciFi but this movie is all over the place, in all the wrong ways.

Umm he lived there I believe He said they were looking for another place for him . The psychiatrist had no idea he was serious about the plan , he was gonna let her leave until she went and opened the doors . The girls. Weren't paying attention and didn't expect him to spray them with something they thought he was in the wrong car . The movie is not all over the place and laid the conceit of the movie out several times ( and the secret scene even reinforced that it is believable in that world) your gripes are that you wanted another movie than what was clearly promised in the trailer
lol this is the same things that make thr walking dead threads annoying. People use hindsight and the fact that they can see things other characters can't to say they woujd do xyz when most people don't know how to act in real life split second situations .

Breh, there is no world in which the psychiatrist does not call the police to let them know of her concerns. Thats a responsibility of people who practice. If there is concern for imminent danger to life, like there was when before decided to go to the building, she has to call the police. And while the girls thought he was in the wrong car, no one screamed or tried to leave the car. Also, why did homegirl sit and listen to the story of the bad guy instead of just running when she had the chance, before he turned back into "The Beast." Why didn't the psychiatrist just say his full name if that was the trick to confusing him?Why did the old woman not just leave when she had the chance instead of opening the door. She knew something was going on and could have left then. Like so much illogical sh!t that I cannot count.

I mean, if it takes place within the Unbreakable universe, him being able to tap into and unleash a super powered version of himself isn't that far fetched

Breh, u either a superhero movie or u not. I rock with SciFi movies, but this sh!t was a boring thriller the changed to SciFi for the last 30 minutes of film time. And setting all that aside, the movie did a terrible job of making us care for the main characters.
The whole plot relied on us caring that the girls survived the kidnapping. Then two of the girls are killed off as an afterthought. We are not even given a reason to care for the girls. We don't get a backstory, and they don't give more info about themselves during captivity. Just a bad bad movie, all the way around.
