Relative to where he started, definitely Herc. Was a half assed "detective" that, even in a bureaucracy so full of incompetence, corruption and nepotism as the Bawlmore PD, he couldn't move up the ladder, not even to seargeant. No one who ever worked with him respected him or thought he was competent, and he was stuck doing the grunt work whenever he was detailed.

After a career full of failure, incompetence, corruption and abuse of power, during which he also found time to casually ruin Randy's entire life, he ended up in a cushy high paying job with a high powered law firm, has Levi as his mentor and gets to meet the family. And judging by his trajectory, he's probably going to end up being made a partner and become a millionaire.:snoop:

:leon:

You right though. Herc won.

I would argue that getting what you want is most germane to the topic. And despite the money and fresh start, he wasn't happy.
He did get what he wanted, he was also lucky enough to get away from what he wanted before it killed him. He also got to avoid prison on some fluke shyt. He wasn't happy because he never imagined or planned a life beyond the block so when he had the whole world in front of him he had no clue what to do. The fact that he didn't know what to do once the game was over doesn't change the fact that he won.

Did he?

There is a level of ambiguity over his final scene but to me, it's heavily implied that he is NOT going to stay on the straight and narrow. He is going back to the block because having his name ringing out is what matters to him. He never quite gained the name recognition of Avon, so he didn't get what he wanted. He got what Stringer wanted.

But maybe you interpret it differently. What is it that you believe he ultimately wanted (and received)?

He wanted run the Baltimore drug game and have an empire like the Barksdales. He also wanted respect in the hood. He got the first for a time the second was his short sightedness limiting him. He may have gone back into the game and turned a W into an L looking for a name in the hood but we don't know that for sure. What we do know for sure is by the end of the show he gets away clean with everything a person could want or need.

Slim Charles came up from a goon to basically being the man in Baltimore. That's a pretty big win in my eyes.

He was the pawn that made it to be King....

The largest W has got to go to the Greek as he had control over many interests in the city and no one even really knew who he was or what he looked like. What does he care about with turf wars when he controls the whole city?

The metaphysical W is Omar as his name still rang out long after Kenard, the toe tag, and the little blurp in the obituaries, something that motivated many characters.

Honorable mention goes to Cutty who went in as a dedicated soldier, was man enough to admit the game was over for him, and attempted to rehab the community that he destroyed years earlier...then got with that fine nurse that was giving him grief over his bullet wounds....

Clay Davis didn't win in the end. Remember Lester Freemon confronted him about some stuff afterwards (I can't remember all the details) and it was implied that a new trial would take place this time around.

With Marlo, he ain't exactly gonna become an IT Security Analyst. His last scene confirmed that it's only a matter of time before he gets what's coming to him.

Just thinking about Herc's lucky ending makes me fukking angry though. Dude ruined Randy's life over a damn camera and he gets to have cavier and live the good life like everything is everything.

I do agree that the Greek probably got the biggest W out of anyone in the series.

Well argued. That said, Im not as optimistic as you are about Hauk's trajectory within the firm. Those qualities you laid out regarding Hauk being a meathead, stubborn, bungling half-wit wouldnt have bode well for any firm partner ambitions. Like on the force, his role would be more muscle than brains. He sure as hell landed on his feet at the end tho.

To me the cleanest W goes to Tommy Carcetti. Rose from no name councilmen to strong gubernatorial candidate in a flash. His trajectory post-wire appeared Godly. His connections, youth, ambition, relatively clean background and innocent looks that masked a shrewd, calculating political mind made it certain he was not only taking the governorship, but he had all the makings of future president.

The way he navigated thru that budget crisis by never sacrificing his future goals was savvy as shyt (and pure dispiriting politics).

What bigger W could there be than positioning yourself as leader of the free world?
