heres my gripes with jodeci being the unanimous champs of this era:
1.) their album catalog is the weakest of the 4 groups.
2.) there were like 3-5 other male groups putting out better albums than jodeci during the bulk of this time period that didn't even make this list.
3.) jodeci's up-tempo game was blah.
Did any of these groups have better than an average up-tempo game? Only ones I can really think of are MotownPhilly and Come and Talk to me but I wasn't the hugest R&B head back then but I did fukk with all of these groups relatively tough.
Boyz II Men.. their body of work + every member could actually sing
That II album
what's understood doesn't need to be spoken
It's obviously Jodeci...one of a kind talent...not many people have voices like K Ci and Jojo..K Ci especially...that nikka coulda rocked wit them old school singers...then factor in Devonte and that nikka was a musical beast...Timbaland was his protege so that should say enough...Boys 2 Men couldn't really sing that well outside of the group and harmonizing...on their own they sounded weak as fukk...Jodeci is the most talented and I don't think it's any contest...I really liked all the groups listed tho...
And I'm glad u mentioned Tony Toni Tone and if threadstarter woulda mentioned them the thread would've been that much more interesting...not that it isn't now..lol^Gotta agree with this. Just like How TLC had LaFace, and that whole machine behind them, Boyz II Men did as well. They had BBD, LaFace, Jam and Lewis etc. all behind them doing most of the writing, and production for their biggest hits, so they were destined to sell diamond albums and have their songs stay #1 on charts for lengthy periods of time. Jodeci on the other hand was all in house. They did have a little help from Al B. Sure (label mate on Uptown), but most of the writing, and production was all done within the group (mainly Devante Swing and Dalvin). So they are kind of a band in a way (hence the name "Diary of A Mad Band") which is more my cup of tea, so I'm giving the nod to them easily. Every group has its weakness, and Jodeci's was they didnt make great uptempo tracks until The Show, After Party Hotel album, when the New Jack Swing sound died out. But when it comes to ballads, they were untouchable.
Jodeci was much more talented than Boyz II Men IMO and showed much more musicianship as a group/band.
My top 3 male r&b groups/bands of the 90s are Mint Condition, Tony Toni Tone and Jodeci.

Yeah its a good thread. Had TTT been in the polls I would easily vote for them. They had the best discography (Sons of Soul and House of Music are two of the best R&B albums of the past 20 years HANDS DOWN), and to me they were the best OVERALL group. They could make hit, wrote, produced, perform a killer show, make uptempo hits, slow jams, ability to sell records and singles, killer album cuts, appealed to both pop audiences and in the hood. etc. You name it.
Boyz II Men could sing the best overall, but I can't listen to too many Boyz II Men songs without wanting to take that joint out and put in something more hardcore. Jodeci had that more grooving, funky sound that I like.
